They sling an old bit of scaffold pole under the back & it fools the tester when he clips his exhaust probe on the back.

mm why ?
Bit like side exhaust on say a caterham, apart from burning your ankle on exit, a style thing only ? Noticed it on a few Merc G wagons as well.
Thought side exhaust had to be behind the front wheel - from a legal point of view

Because I'd be amazed if a mot tester worth his salt would be taken in by a scaffold tube in place of an exhaust.
Besides don't cars get lifted up to check underneath?

What I don't understand is that most VW 4pot diesels, be it crossflow head or not, PD or non-PD, all have the exhaust manifold/turbo at the rear of the engine BEHIND the front wheels.
So the pipework required to make it exit in front of the wheel must be rather inventive.
Heath Robinson would be proud....just chop it off at the down-pipe and be done with it

So as nuts as this viper-esque side exhaust on the piece of motoring pornography that is the Mk IV TDI Golf, I can believe someone was that stupid to go to that amount of trouble.

I think I may have answered my question.....http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.u...-arl-4-motion/

Seriously? Replace the battery and airbox with a f**k off huge secondary turbo. Then think out how to plumb it all in later after a dozen Jagerbombs, and then after much head scratching and realising its not all going to fit, give up put the battery/master fusebox in the rear footwell and cut a hole in the bonnet. Good effort, but its not exactly practical covering the windscreen with soot though
