I don't think you will go wrong with either as long as it meets the spec. Personally i would go with the 5W 40. Most manufacturers recommend 5W30 for emissions and mpg purposes. From what i understand shell is descent stuff, personally i think its better to have a mid range oil and change it more often than excellent oil and only change it once over say 12-15000 miles.
Most garages use stuff like tripleQX in cars and only carry 2 types of oil (10w40 semi and 5w30 fully) the one i worked at did and we never had a problem, Shell is certainly better than euro carparts own branded tripleQX

this is the 5/40 of the oil, with code it works out at £16.99
would this meet or exceed the spec?

yeah ive used that before myself with the same type of code, cant go wrong at that price especially for 5 litres and a bosch or mann filter (i would choose mann). I used it a couple of times in my scooby before upping the power

Whilst Euro car parts is one of our main suppliers, we will not touch triple QX. You get what you pay. A good garage won't use it (We stock Castrol). And no modern car manufacturer uses 10w40 semi synth (we don't stock it anymore ).
The correct oil for your car will be listed here: http://oilselector.castrol.com/c/uk/eng/search
For Shell oil, bang your reg number into here: http://lubematch.shell.co.uk/gb/en_GB/browse/cars
Both of these use the OATs database.
You don't say if your car has a DPF or not, if it is it should be a low ash oil; C2 or C3.
Viscosity means squat all these days as it changes when the oil breaks down or gets diluted with fuel. It's quality and longevity is more important.

thanks ALi-B no DPF, it is a old merc engine as far as i know.
I did look on the different web sites, shell, millers, opie, etc etc but they do list different spec oils. some fully, some semi etc.
i ordered the 5/40 from the link above in the end
