Default golf tdi turbo replacment

I'm in the middle of fitting a recon turbo to my golf tdi (03). I've connected up the oil feed and bolted the new turbo on to the exhaust side. I was thinking off running it up without the intake manifold, egr and other intake side pipes to in order to check for oil leaks and that I've got a healthly oil flow in and out. Would this do the engine any harm sucking the air straight in through the side of the block? I know it'll run rough but will be much easier to see and fix any problems.
Cheers
