Default Opinions?

righty!

ive come to the conclusion its time to sell up my bugeye, im gonna be fixing two or three issues soon, and then its time to bite the bullet.

one of the cars im looking at is an E92 BMW 320D Coupe.

wondering if anyone's got one? or if they know what they are like? I've always wanted a bmw coupe, and an M3 is well out my price range on that shape. So decided maybe a more sensible approach is required. Nice diesel coupe with low road tax and plenty MPG...

Opinions and horror stories wanted please....

also are bmws like on snow? totally useless?

Google "N47 timing chain". That's all the horror stories you'll ever need and the biggest bill you'll see on one of these cars if it fails. Generally it ok once its been sorted though.

Like the older diesel engine it also has swirl flaps. The difference on the later engine is these don't fail/fall off like they used to with the old M47 engine, but instead the bushes wear out and they get leaky under boost causing DPF issues from excessive soot being produced. Flaps on the N47 cannot be removed/blanked; New inlet manifold required (people confuse this with the old M47 which can have the flaps removed).

Other that the rest of the car is pretty solid, the OEM batteries made by Banner fail earlier (lucky if you get 5 from the Banner; Used to get 10years out of a OEM Exide/Varta). Engine ECU can go for a swim if the scuttle and trim covers have not been replaced properly and the drains block up...something to keep an eye if its been removed for engine work and/or the car is parked under trees.

If someone tempts you with a petrol version touting reliability, make sure its a not a N43 (direct injected 4 cylinder ). They are terrible.

Snow? Like I found when off roading Land Rovers...you can go almost anywhere with the right tyres. You won't get very far with summer tyres up north (although southerners still seem to get them stuck in 1mm of slush ).

Hi,
Regarding BMW in the snow - I had a 123d with winter tyres and that could go anywhere on snow. It was actually funny watching other cars following you up a snowy hill and not making it - they looked puzzled that a BMW could go where they couldnt!
Cheers
Steve
