The wifes dad has just bought a '90 GT4 import (nice looking car), but it doesnt seem to be runing to what I or he thought to its true potential

When he picked it up he'd put normal unleaded in. After a quick search for some optimax and not been able to find any he settled for sul. It seemed to run a bit better but I was under the impression that it should be a minimum of 97-98+ octane?

Also and for whatever reason it has a 110mph speed sticker on it and it also seems to have a 112mph regulator on it (he has a long driveway ).

Are there anyone places close to say Wokingham, Camberely area that know these cars and arent going to break the bank?

Thanks Nath

Don't think the GT4 needs 98 octane as all cars in Japan then has cats & used unleaded (the UK spec GT4 was the first car in the UK that has a cat & uses unleaded exclusively).
All Jap spec cars are limited to 112mph (180km/h) top speed, & that's also the reason y the speedo only reads up to 112mph/180km/h.

It hasnt got a cat on it, just an aftermarket stainless..I could also do with finding somewhere that de-restricts them. Any ideas as to how much this costs and whats involved?

Thanks Nath

All imports run better on higher octane fuel. The problem with the limiter can be sorted for around £100-look in the classifieds of Japperformance/Banzai.
The cars are strange in the way that for some reason,Toyota decided to restrict the boost in 1st and 2nd gear to roughly half that of 3rd,4th and 5th.This makes the car feel slow. You can get around this by fitting an HKS fuel cut defencer and a bleed valve/dawes.I went in a friend of a friends and after we found the FCD under the dash and adjusted it,it was loads faster and felt more like a turbo car.
Set boost at around 0.8 bar if no other mods done,1 bar if exhaust and filter sorted-no higher.

Then the car has been de-catted as all Jap cars since the mid-80's have cats.
Optimax should do fine with that 3S-GTE engine.
A delimiter costs around £100ish.
As the car is quite old, have u got any idea of it's past history back in Japan?

Hi mate

I have a 1993 Carlos Sainz and these cars have great potential but need a kick up the ****. Up the boost to 14psi along with a decat and disconnect the VSV and you will have a big smile on your face. Get yourself over to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GT-Four-Owners-UK/ where hundreds of owners can help you. Also look at www.gt4oc.co.uk and www.gtfour.com and www.k1ano.co.uk.

Cool

I had an ST185 GT4 90 spec and ran it on Optimax. Also I had the FCD and relief valve, it went very well for a car that was produced back in 1990. When you changed the octane, did you reset the ECU...? Try and clear all the unleaded fuel out first before you put in the Optimax. Before paying for your fuel, take out the EFI fuse situated under the bonnet in the fuse box. By the time you have payed and connecting the fuse again the ECU would of been reset.

When you start the car it may sound rough due to the ECU adjusting to the new octane level. Don't worry that is normal and will settle under normal driving conditions.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Kev

In the right hand fuse box it says EFI under under the lid indicating which one to remove. Leave it for about 30seconds and then put it back in. You may find the ECU idles a little rough to begin with while the ECU starts learning. Best thing to do then is take the car out and do some mixed driving.
