My mate is thinking of buying a Volvo T5 estate for about 6K. Can anyone offer any alternative estate cars with similar performance and running costs eg insurance, servicing etc?

My dad used to be a manager at a Volvo dealership a few years back before setting his own business up (lucky escape some would say)..
Yes, Volvo 850 "T5"s are quick, The 850 "T5R"s are quicker, but the more limited 850 "R" is the one to go for. It was a 250bhp estate as standard. **** mpg if your going to get a 250bhp beast for £6k!

Less than 10 Mpg, they arent great on fuel but I have never seen one do less than about 20.
The D5 is quicker is it, does 50 mpg does it, yeah whatever !
I am generally regarded as the Scoobynet token T5 owner, bought ours due to three kids and a dog and didnt want a people carrier.
Go for it, ours is 8 years old and looks pretty much like new following a day spent cleaning and fettling. They arent to bad to run, cheapo tyres can be had for fifty quid a corner. Got Original equipment (ATE) disks and pads for the front from Euro Car Parts and fitted them myself, 78 quid all in, try over 300 quid at a Volvo Main Dealer.
Most have done mega miles now, so be carefull of clockers, our has 75 k on it and no major problems, service and MOT tommorow so we shall see.
Not big fun as a package but for destroying hot hatches and making Scoobs work harder than they are used to, cant be beaten.

Mark...a buddy of mine says his 9000 Aero will see off the T5 any time, any place !! , plus the boot's nearly as big AND there's a big parcel shelf for the tartan rug and pipe holder !

Just as an aside I did see an Audi S2 estate advertised on EBAY auctions. Could be something to think about, and like the T5 its a 5 Cylinder turbocharged beast.

Have had a T5 too and it does the same mpg as the Scoob on average but better on long runs. Go for the auto version, the 7 seater and get leather etc. The cars are great and I'd happily have another but'd prefer the 850R.

The S2 is in a different league really, the Saab 900 Aero is very similar performance wise, a neighbour had the full on 230 BHP one, I wouldnt say it would see a T5 off given the fact its the same power output (5 bhp more) and weighs about the same, the Saab also has the same problems as the T5, front wheel drive + big power, with the addded disadvantage of an older chassis design, even more wayward in the wet than a T5, nice and cheap though, engine definetly not as nice being a 4 pot.
