I hear that the Mini One (90 BHP most dyno tested at about 100 BHP) has a throttle that doesn't open fully, and if opened you can get +30% power. Anyone know anything about this? Seems mighty impressive on a NA engine, but if the throttle isn't opening fully then makes sense?

90bhp + 30% is 117bhp. Isn't that about what the Cooper (not S) has? Does this mean the only difference, engine-wise, between the One and the Cooper is the restricted throttle travel?
IIRC some truck manufacturers have been known to do this (same engine in two differently priced models, engine on the cheaper one deliberately crippled by the ECU). I suppose it's cheaper than making two different power output engines.

You see "crippled" versions electronic goods a lot now. It is very much cheaper to have one version with only a simple difference (a single byte in the software for example!)
(Microprocessors are a good example - eg. speed binning & underclocking - AMD sold 500Mhz K6 chips as 400MHz chips for a while )
It may cut production costs by in half, believe it or not!
It was only a matter of time before the car manufacturers thought of this as well as consumer electronics.
Now all we need to do is to find and correct the crippled bits!
