Hi All,
Anyone had any experience of the above? I have been looking at a 4.0 Ltd SE model. L plate 50k miles - just wondered if they are reliable, ok for reasonable mileages, comfy etc?
Want something different..
Ta,
Jim

I've driven one once from Stockport to Stoke. Cost me £20 in juice. I loved it, but couldn't live with that kind of mpg (16 according to the trip computer )
Engines would survive a nuclear holocaust, but the gearboxes can be suspect.

I Drove a 4.0 Ltd and its an interesting car/jeep whatever. The steering in the one I drove was so vague is was hilarious!, I could turn the wheel a good 3" without the car even starting to steer!, apparently this was due to it being heavily off roaded though.
Awesome power delivery, the thing shakes when you rev it!. I looked at the Stealth Ltd Edtn last year (all black) and my mechanic warned me off them as he said "they are cheap for a reason" and his reason was that they are fairly unreliable and shoddy - but Ive heard different!
The one I drove was white, a L reg and had leather and was really comfy - I love sitting high like you do in 4x4s. The switchgear is a little dated but that adds to the charecter of the car, hence they have only just released a new facelifted model now after all these years of production!
I think if you can live with the forrific consumption then for the money they are good fun, all the toys etc etc.
Ps - I love the pop out storage box on the roof inside, put there for the electric gate/garage remote!! - it tells you inside!!

I had a P-reg one for a couple of years. Averaged 18mpg - which was fine in the US where I bought it with petrol less than £1 a gallon, but I sold it pretty quickly after importing it back here.
If you think the steering on the Cherokee is woolly, the Grand Cherokee is even worse! (Though I speak from experience of US models only, which apparently are set up softer than over here).
Lovely torquey engine, though, the 4 litre. Not exactly the most modern of beasts, mind you...

..and I forgot to mention that it did a 13000 mile trip through the depths of the US over a 2 month summer without missing a beat - 40 degrees C temperatures, driving through deserts, dirt roads etc. So they are pretty solid.
Not sure if this applies to UK ones, but you can get different levels of sophistication on the 4wd. Mine was the most basic (Command-Trac, I think?), which was rear wheel drive usually, but switchable into 4wd (push a lever) with a low/high range, too. Other ones have assorted electronic gubbins, more sophisticated diffs etc.

we have had two (currently got a 2001 model)...a good practical 4x4 that doesn't wallow all over the place, good spec too
both times we went for diesel, 14-16mpg is just too much unless you own a petrol station

I had an M plate 4.0 Stealth. Got it with 50k on the clock and sold it with 80k.
Common problems are the tubular exhaust manifold cracking( blow's untill warm). If rear axle oil changes are missed the LSD can wear and start to slip (bang or crack from rear whilst cornering on throttle or pulling away from standstill).Door hinge weld's can crack/break( tell tale is door dropped slightly, possibly hard to shut).
They are more car like to drive than you would think. I enjoyed owning mine but my only grumble's were the front seats were low backed and didn't offer much support to taller driver's and they have ton's of end float in the rear half shaft's so they thud from the rear on uneven ground.
