Question

A good m8 is looking to ditch his tuned Golf GTi and is looking at an RX7. Not sure if UK or import, but any advice or experiences would be sound.

3rd Gen RX7? www.fduk.org & www.mazdarotaryclub.com are a couple of good places to start. Only 100 and some UK cars sold, about 300 imports in the UK.

Need loads of TLC, especially the engine. Very thirsty and expensive insurance but only classed as a 1.3l so cheap on tax
Would advise getting someone who knows about them to look over any he sees.

Beautiful cars though.

Cheaper insurance than a Scoob. And that is as a second car.

Tell your mate that a wankle designed it I've heard they cost loads to run because the fuel economy sucks and servicing/repairs are a nightmare with the unique engine design.

Plus the engines need to be rebuilt after 60K-80K miles due to ir's Wankle design. Although saying that you can get big power out of RX-7's. They can be tuned to run very big power.

It is true that many need engine rebuild at 60k->80k. However there are cars in the US that have no modifications and have in excess of 300,000 miles on original engine. Careful modification, lots of TLC is the key (oil change every 3,000 miles).

Fuel consumption is poor, many average about 18mpg and 25mpg is difficult to achieve I am not aware that insurance is any worse than other performance cars of similar power. Stock UK car is 237bhp, stock jap imports upto 280bhp.

There are specialists who do not charge the earth e.g. Tim at RX Motors. If the RX-8 takes off then there will no doubt be more rotary expertise in the UK.

Go for a test drive, www.twwhiteandsons.co.uk allow test drives. They are beautiful cars and totally different to scoobies, evos, skylines etc.
