106 Rallye

After looking around for tidy MkII Golfs for the last few weeks (and finding none in my price range with less than 100k on the clock) I went looking at a S1 106 Rallye yesterday. 94L, 50k, 2 lady owners (knackered clutch then...
), FSH and I got it for 1400 quids.
It has a few minor supermarket dings but nothing that a bodyshop shouldn't be able to sort out easily enough. Another plus is that it's one of the few black ones imported to the UK, as most were red or white.
First time on the motorway I couldn't believe how short the gears are - @ 80mph in 5th you're almost pulling 5000rpm! So from a licence point of view it's definitely a winner as I'll probably just sit at 65-70mph most of the time. Gave it a long blast down some local B-roads last night and it's a cracking little tool capable of keeping pace with cars that should leave it standing. Keep it on the boil and it's a hoot, plus the handling is first class. To top it off the fuel needle hasn't budged in the last 50 miles either, something which I appreciate having had a MY00 for 12 months...
So if anyone has any advice to impart, or links to 106-related stuff please pass em on.
Anyway I must go, I have 7400rpm to play with and I intend to use every last one of em.

Well, you picked a great car there! ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
I had a modded 106 GTi (running 141bhp) for a couple of years and it was an absolutely superb car, which I still miss now.
Handling is absolutely amazing and you will soon learn that there is not much to touch them round the twisty stuff. Wait until you master the lift-off oversteer!![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Try the Pug forums for more info...
Peugeot Sport Club (PSC) - www.peugeotsportclub.com
Peugeot GTi Autosport Club (PGAC) - www.peugeot-gti.net
There are loads of peformance and handling mods available for the 106, so you've a lot to go at, if you want.

Well what a bargain 1400 quid, I would have thought they would have fetched more than that being that they where made in limited numbers.
I had a red L plater from new and had a thoroughly entertaining 25K in it, unfortunately I never made the trip to LAD.
Sold it bought an older civic Vti, excellent engine but lacked the focus of the Rallye which is why a year later I traded it for the 1.6 Rallye in Blue, debadged and had another 30K entertaing miles before going into big boys league and bought MY99 brand new in Racing green.

Yeah - we still have a MK1 106 Rallye - great car - very high revving engine. The car is set up for tarmac with Compomotive MOs flaps and the works.
Still enjoy it today.

The XSi and Rallye are/were two completely different cars...
As has already been said, the mk1 Rallye, was a 1.3 litre engine producing 100bhp @ 7200rpm (they love to rev), wheras the XSi was either a 1.4 litre engine producing 100bhp @ ?rpm or the last ones were a 1.6 litre engine producing 105bhp @ 5600rpm.
The 1.6 XSi engine is also different to the mk2 Rallye, although basically the same lump, the Rallye had a different head, cam, ECU and produced 103bhp, but in a different way to the Rallye and is less frantic.
The XSi had it's peak power at 5600rpm, wheras the Rallye had it's peak power at 6200rpm, with a different engine charecteristic and shorter box on the Rallye, making them a completely different drive. This is also the same basic engine used in the Saxo VTR, but the Saxo has less power and a long ratio'd gearbox.
Performance wise, slowest first -
mk 1.6 XSi:
Power - 105bhp @ 5600rpm
Torque - 101lb/ft @ 3000rpm
Weight - 900kg
0-30 - 3.4secs
0-60 - 9.7secs
0-100 - 29.9secs
Speed - 117mph
Mk1 1.3 Rallye:
Power - 100bhp @ 7200rpm
Torque - 80lb/ft @ 5400rpm
Weight - 825kg
0-30 - 3.5secs
0-60 - 9.6secs
0-100 - 29.5secs
Speed - 115mph (sat on the redline!)
Mk2 1.6 Rallye:
Power - 103bhp @ 6200rpm
Torque - 97lb/ft @ 3500rpm
Weight - 865kg
0-30 - 3.1secs
0-60 - 8.5secs
0-100 - 25.6secs
Speed - 121mph
Strangely enough, the mk1 Rallye although least powerful, weighs b*gger all, so has the best power-to-weight ratio at 121bhp/tonne!![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
p.s. There are only 1081 mk1 Rallye's, a mere 796 1.6 XSi's, a whopping 5201 1.4 XSi's and only about 500 mk2 Rallye's in the UK!

1400 quid was indeed a bargain, I bought it from some bloke who trades mainly 106's and he didn't seem to be aware that they are an enthusiast's car. I've only seen 1 other Rallye sell for less than 2k. ![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
My intention is to move to a series 2 rallye as and when I can afford it, I've always liked them and I reckon the extra torque of the 1.6 will make it slightly easier to live with day-to-day.
I've always had a soft spot for Peugeots especially their unique handling. I had a tuned 205 GTi for 6 years before getting a MY00 Scooby (fantastic car but it just didn't have the driver involvement of the 205). I sold the Scooby a few months ago as it was costing silly amounts of money, hence the 106 which I bought cash and is currently getting 40+ mpg![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
The only spanner in the works at the moment is a rough-running problem which I suspect is either a blown lamda sensor, or faulty airflow meter. Once that's sorted I'll have a very capable economical car for very little cash.

I had a Black one L69***. Loved it to bits,Andrew Golby the now editor of Rally XS mag bought it off me for his women and ran an article on it in Autocar mag, whom he was working for at the time (March 98).I had just bought my 1st Scoob a MY98 and was gutted I had to part with the Rallye.
Still if I could find one for about £1400 I,d defo buy another as a 2nd car.

Ha good choice!!
I don't have mine now but I loved it! I can still vividly remember the long motorway drives(noise) but once you get onto B roads they are great!
5th seems like 4th gear in most 'normal' cars.
It takes a while to get used to thrashing it everywhere but once you do there is no turning back!! Until you drive another car and you keep bouncing off the rev limiter!!!
Enjoy it mate I miss mine loads!
Andy
Edited to say most people seem to use LAD motor sport to get them tuned but 100bhp from a 1293cc aint too bad!

They're wonderful little cars (I had an M plate one for a couple of years) but I hope you don't have too many long trips to make COS THEY GET A BIT NOISY AT "NORMAL" CRUISING SPEEDS!
Edited to say that mine was black (with rusty white steel wheels
) and the only other one I see about these days is black as well - so maybe not that rare ![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
