Porsches

after selling my 3 dr cossy and being disillusioned with modern tat.
Thinking of getting a Porsche - always loved the looks - but never dared get one (maintenance/insurance/parking etc).
anyone any advice - or good web sites to visit.
my thinking - upto £10000 to spend - 2nd car - must be RHD - mainly weekend/summer use.
1981/85 911SC - are these 3 litre ? - looks fantastic
late 80's 944 Turbo or non-turbo

Maintenance - as long as you go to a respected specialist, it wont be that bad,i think jzmachtech have fixed priced servicing on their website www.jzmachtech.com
Insurance - at that age, you will be able to get it on a classic policy, so it will be cheap as chips, as long as you aren't going to do big mileage.
Parking.. dependent on where you live, but i've never have any problems, and ive had 6 of them now!.
Great buy imho, and provide plenty of fun learning how to drive / tame them!
www.911virgin.com is a great place to start looking, if only for the advice

I have a 1990 944 Turbo 250bhp.
Insurance is £500 less than my impreza. Fuel is a little worse round town but better on a run.
The Turbo needs servicing every 6000 miles or six months. There are loads of independant places now to keep the costs down.
Most consumables are cheaper that those on the Impreza.

cheers - any more advice gratefully accepted
rallycol - wife wont drive a LHD car - and someone has to pick me up from the pub.
plus need to look at some and decide best model for me before jumping straight in.
at 35 with full NCB insurance should be OK - car will be garaged etc.

Go for a 3.2 Carrera with sport equipment (84 to 89). If you find a good one (of which there are many) get it checked over by a specialist Porsche garage. Do NOT buy blind.
When you've bought it, YOU WILL NEVER LOOK BACK.

With up to £10000 to spend, I'd go for a late model 944 - either a 2.7, S2 or Turbo. We've had a 2.7 in the family for 6 years, and it's been 100% reliable, has required little other than routine servicing, and still looks in better condition than most nearly new cars. The S2 is more complex because of the 16v head, and may well need specialist attention at the sort of age you are buying. They do have noticeably more 'ooomph' than the 2.7 though, but still aren't quite as quick as a standard scoob or probably your cossie. I've never driven a turbo, but they are meant to suffer from noticeable turbo lag, and overall are not meant to be as pleasant to drive as the S2.
I'm really not convinced you'll get a nice 911 for that sort of money, and you may well be looking at sorting out corrosion problems, engine and gearbox rebuilds etc. The early 911's are a more charismatic car than the 944, but do feel very agricultural in comparison.
I'd pick up some copies of the magazine 911 and Porsche World. There are back issues which may still be available with buying guides for both.
Regards,
Gary.

Anyone know of any good Porche 944 websites.
Im currently wanting to upgrade my MR2 Turbo for a subaru impreza STI or a Porche 944.
I would like to modify the one I get, are there any decent mods for the 944.
Whats the best 944? Turbo, 2.7, or S2?
Any info guys??

I am converted - just wish I took the plunge sooner.
The Momo went on fine Jeff, and to be honest it makes the car feel so much better!
I love it

I agree with what has been said.....
£10K won't buy you a reliable 911 - the 3.2 being the one to go for but they tend to kick in at £14K upwards...
A 944 could be bought for that money - and a good one
Tell us all what you decide on etc..

Having raced my old S2 in my newly acquired 250 Turbo (number 3), I would say that there's b*gger all in it between the S2 and the Turbo, and a UK Scoob wouldn't get a look in (except, of course, on the twisties, this is Scoobynet after all).
I wouldn't do a £10k 911, get a very nice 944 Turbo for about £8k and spend the other two on mods if you feel the need. There's next to nothing you can do to get more out of an S2 (except replace the cams since the chain isn't checked as part of Porsche's servicing schedule), and you don't get leather, climate and LSD with them as standard.

Oh, and it's Biddie Baxter; if you're going to play the **** then learn to spell.

Late 944 turbo 250bhp is the one to get.
For £1000 you will get a dual port wastgate and an extra 50 bhp
Job done!
http://www.titanic.co.uk/944/
Edited to day, if you get the right one, you get Koni adjustable shocks, big brakes and an LSD as standard.
