New MR2 V6 Any information?
#2
I've been following this closely as I'm really keen to stay mid/engine rear wheel drive and would jump at the Mk3 MR2 if it had a little bit more poke (it's no faster than my current car).
Basically the situation is confused. Toyota are completely denying that they'll ever offer an MR2 with a V6, and are even suggesting that they might drop the MR2 from sale altogether. This might just be them protecting the values and sales of 140hp cars. HOWEVER, rumours amongst the MR2 community are beginning to suggest otherwise.
First, a three litre V6 MR2 has most definitely been made. It looks really polished and finished (see here: http://lexusownersclub.com/gallery/album07?&page=5) unlike the very obviously promotional F1-concept vehicle made by TTE (picture on same page, middle top) suggesting that it could easily go into production. It got great feedback from the motorshow when it was presented too.
Second, perhaps more tellingly, some MR2 folk were at a test track (I think Nurburgring, not sure) and one of them got chatting to a TTE test driver who quietly said that they were testing some new suspension settings for the new (oops!) V6 MR2.
So they've built one and they're testing one... but whether they'll actually sell it is a completely different story. If they do, expect 240 bhp, 0-60 in the mid fives and more than one gee lateral grip (as the standard car can do!)
Clett
PS the 190bhp 1.8 engine from the Celica doesn't suit the MR2 (reason why here: http://www.toysport.com/Technical%20...tech_notes.htm) so it's unlikely they'll put that in either.

Thanks C
That was a very detailed replie, thanks for thanking the time and trouble. I am looking at the Toyota V6 because it is thought that Lotus are testing a "Camless" version right now, for use in the M250/2.
I have driven the Toyota 190 lump and it makes my Honda type "R" feel like a V8! I spent 30 mins trying to find the power, but couldn't!
as you say, one to watch (this is a great BB)

Sorry about the spelling, fax manchine went off and i was reading and typing at the same time. BTW It is thought that Toyota and Lotus are working on an Anti-spin" system like that used on the Honda NSX.
Cheers
