First of all stop sniggering!
Does anyone know much about them?
Just bought one as 2nd car runaround(£400). Mighty impressed with the twin cam Honda power.Even more surprised with the taught handling ,not Scooby standard by any means, but still good fun. Any info much appreciated......no taking the ****!

I think they do two different version of the 416, the GTi and the GSi. The difference is that one has the 130BHP honda twin cam engine (as fitted to the CRX) and the GSi has the 1.6 single cam engine fitted.
For £400 I think you got a good deal, thats the cost of a 24,000 mile service on an Impreza....

bought a 216gti in june 1994.
fuel injection pump went about dec 94 and cost nearly £500 but covered by warranty.
after that was totally reliable. services and nothing else ever went wrong.
sold it to my father in 2000 when i bought a scoob. he then got it stolen a couple months ago - got it back - then 2 weeks ago went off the road and wrote it off.
about 165,000 on the clock and still totally reliable.
great little car....130 bhp twin cam as mentioned. good accleration, excellent roadholding, excellent interior..part leather, v comfy seats, and good level of equipment for a 1991 car...electric windows, roof, mirrors etc
416 the same afaik except the saloon not a hatchback.
v good buy for £400.

Steve220T ... Agreed ... bumcrack. You must be seriously blinkered or maybe your is sincere after all ... hope so
Anyway, tell you a story:
About eight/nine years ago my firm needed to send me "up north" for a few days. That's OK, I'll use my own car and cop for the mileage allowance. Nice one. No way, we'll supply a hire car and fuel - it'll be there waiting 7am.
Sure enough, in the still dark winter morning, plain looking little Rover hire car was delivered to my door. Didn't even bother to check what model. Rover 420GSi or summat like that. Off I go and within a few miles I'm on the M5 northbound in the still dark winter morning's dullness. Car warmed up nicely now and begining to get used to it. Not much about - see how she goes - boy did that little baby go ... REALLY go! Particularly by early 1990s standards. Can't wait to see what's under that bonnet ... this little Rover is indecently nippy.
Hundred plus miles later I reached my destination and if you have not already guessed, under the bonnet of that little Rover was a turbocharged 2 litre petrol Rover T16 powerplant. That was my first ever experience of the T16 turbo and I was immediately impressed and been a fan ever since. Previously, my only turbo experience was with 8v MG Montego which by 1980s standards, were also quite nippy. During the 1990s, Turbo T16s have been fitted to several Rovers of various sizes; 200/400/600s. I like 'em too. Superbly progressive power delivery. Some enthusiasts have fitted these engines to Maestros, Montegos and even a Maestro van ... not too difficult a transplant ... net result: one of the best Q car/vans ever for minimal outlay provided the VERY necessary suspension and brake upgrades are also done. This engine has been known to produce in excess of 400 bhp when shall we say "tweaked'.
Don't care what you drive ... never underestimate those little Rovers. Could be a Turbocharged T16 ..... they're seriously nippy ...

Well, i've just got hold of a 416GTi for free off my grandad, until i decide which proper motor to buy. Its an auto, but i have to say its bloody quick, even with a slushbox fitted. The only problem is the fact that it understeers incredibly in anything other than perfect dry road.
Still, good car though.

although i drive a scoob for a ist car my back up is a rover 400 touring 6 years old and only a new fuel pump my previus car was rover 216gsi of which i run to 95k miles in 8 years never saw a garage apart from servicing and would do 120 tops! + my mate had the 216gti with 140k on clock and it would do 130 trying to keep up with the scoob.
my boy who is learning to drive has inherited a 214 sli from a relative 10.5 years old 40k on clock and showroom condition.these cars are built to last , my next car to replace the touring is the MG touring TD in green . i just hope the scoob is such a reliable car in 10 years time when its handed down to the boy
