Question

No doubting the all-round capability of the 330D as an oil burner (I had one and loved it) but what about other rear-wheel drive DERVs? Has anybody had a blast in a 270 or 320 CDi (E or C Class)?

Cheers
Kav

I've driven lots of oil burners and none compare to the 330d. My uncles chipped A4 2.5TDI came close but I think it was the 4WD traction and novelty of 6 gears that was floating my boat. The BMW was a fantastic car to drive with such a grunty feeling to it. Still the king for now IMO but I'm rapidly loosing touch with what performance oil burners are out there.

C270cdi is nice, quick, handles better than any other Merc Saloon ever has, but the Engine is a little down on power and a lot down on refinement (only a 5-pot).

The E320CDI is a lot better, but the car a lot heavier, and thus the extra grunt is more than lost.

Then there is the price

The 400CDI (4.0 V8) is the engine to go for (imagine THAT in a C-Class ) but as yet, there are no plans to bring the E400CDI/M400CDI/S400CDI to the UK

The 2.5 VW lump is getting better but still down on power and refinement!

As it stands, the 330d is pretty much unrivalled, and with the uprated engine (220bhp 370lb/ft) standing in the wings, nothing looks to be coming close!

The 330d Coupe is coming out with 225bhp up from 184bhp now,i have my 330d Tuned t0 220bhp so if the new 2nd Gen 3.0d common rail is as fast as my 330d then it should be pretty quick.

New AMG C30 Sports Coupe, apparently is a classy derv peformance car (2 door though).

231bhp and 398lb/ft torque from a 3 litre engine. Drives very well too.

Audi have a nice new V6 diesel coming to the UK market.

The 180bhp V6 is looking 'under-torqued' by comparison with PD/common-rail versions of the 1.9 VAG engines.

When it arrives, the safe tuning potential will be excellent - just as with the 320cdi Merc and 330/530d BMs

400 lb/ft torque is pretty phenominal but this is going to be fairly common before long in mid-size top end cruisers
