Question

How do you rate this as a second car, will it have enough oomph to compete with newer cars in its class, ie. Ibiza, Corsa, etc. ?

I know it isn't as fast as the new GTi 180 out soon, but as a 2nd hand buy is it worth it, or should i look elsewhere ?

Seek out the_gza who had one a couple of months back (was selling it to my knowledge)
He moved to a Clio Cup for "more oomph" and fun.
It's only got about 130odd BHP, so don't expect it to keep up with Ibiza Cupras.
As a mild hatch, it's not bad.
Why not try a Focus ST170 or used Clio 172 ?

Ask Dave T-S and you'll soon be running away from the Pug garage.

However, I had one on a cheap lease from work for 12 months and thought it was a very good motor. Previously had a 1.8 Clio.

Nicely spec'd with CD, Climate, part leather trim etc.

Didn't miss a beat in 12k miles and it did get given driven hard. I averaged 24mpg Front tyres were shagged when I handed it back.

You rang?

Well I have had two, and actually really liked them. Not much to look at as standard, but add a few bits and bobs - et voila much improved. It's certainly quick enough to keep up with other hot hatches out there - not quite in the CTR league, but fast enough. Autocar did time one at 7.1 sec to 60 if figures float your boat It's quite a 'lazy' engine in that you don't get the same impression of speed as you do with other cars of similar performance, but it does go well - found it equal to a 306GTi-6 and Clio 16V in performance terms (on a private circuit).

I know it isn't as fast as the new GTi 180 out soon, but as a 2nd hand buy is it worth it, or should i look elsewhere ?
You can certainly pick up a bargain - a lot of toys for the money, and likely to remain quite affordable as and when the GTi180 comes out. I've just sold mine for more than I was asking for Have you driven one yet? At the end of the day, it's down to personal preference - the stand out points for me were the looks and interior! Performance is on a par, along with the handling. I didn't have any major problems with either of mine over 26,000 miles - only need servicing every 20k as well if you are happy leaving it that long between services.

Feel free to drop me an email if you have any queries

Cheers

PS A K&N panel filter and decent backbox (Magnex/Devil) will give you around 145-147bhp and 148lb/ft torque, plus a decent note without being too noisy

Good car, have had mine for 2.5 years, good torquey engine with 138bhp, de-cat, panel filter & superchip will yield 150-155bhp. Often overlooked and underrated, but bear in mind it weighs less than many of its competitors (someone mentioned the Ibiza cupra, that weighs in at 1100kg odd, 206 is 1035kg), the chassis is right up there with the clio 172, easily so after an eibach spring upgrade (£80), its just that the power seems to be rather bland above 5000+rpm. from 2k to 5000 rpm, its a solid performer. Good brakes, though a bit "on-off" for my liking. Gearchange is good, albeit the gearstick's throw is too long.

Ain't had a single problem with mine over the 20k miles ive used it over, be it mechanical or interior wear and tear either, for what its worth.

Loads of road noise, not very fast, uncomfy, dated in my opinion!
I think the 106 is better, and 172 is better still! Or if you like me and like german cars get a ibiza cupra or Lupo GTI but thats even slower - quite cool tho!

Someone call?

We had one each, and they were a pile of **** (IMHO ), got rid of them after three months to buy two Impreza MY00's.

Slow, too upright with narrow track and soft suspension so loads of body roll, poor gearchange, crap seats, too upright driving position, offset cramped pedal box, LHD wipers that left a blind spot, curved rear window that distorted rear view.....the list goes on!

PS - px'd our 306 GTi-6 for one of the 206's, and in hindsight the 306 was a far better car in probably all respects

Thanks for the varied advise, i've not driven one yet but have driven the GTi-6 and liked it alot.. So tuned it could be a FWD car with 150+bhp/T, getting towards fast enough.

Have looked at te Lupo GTi for fun, and didn't realise how seriously it is raced in Germany. It can be easily mod'd to 175bhp, and that makes it over 185bhp/T !!!

I have seen decent 206 GTis for around £8-9k, and Lupo GTis around £9-11k which are much rarer (that i like the idea of)

Drove a 172 and didn't like it much, with offset driving position too, so i probably won't like the 206 then.

Cheers

mmmm..... decisions decisions.....
