Has anyone had any experiences of the Audi RS4 as I'm thinking about getting one! I do know that as with the RS2 they are expected to hold their prices very well which is always a bonus!

I need an every day car, at the moment I have a Jag XJR but it's not big enough for the family outings..the obvious choice would be a RS4 or a M5 which still might not be big enough for 2 kids!

Cheers
Dom.

Never owned one, but know someone well who has.

Fantastic motorway cars, but dull the senses a little. If you want something raw and frenetic like a Scoob or Evo, this isn't it. If you want something refined and effortless, might be the right car.

Personally, if i'm going fast, i want to know i'm going fast, not just watch the scenery going past in a silent blur. But each to their own.

RS4 retain value very well. If you get one, get it to quattrosports for MTM treatment...450bhp, no problem!!

I'll be keeping the STI RA for when I feel like a proper drive..the RS4 would be my company car and mainly used for driving round the M25 in the rush hour!

Now a 450bhp conversion might be tempting!

I like the silver...never seen any other colours, I think only 4000 RS4's were made worldwide!

I think I better arrange a test drive.

I test drove one today and boy was it quick!! The only problem was the usual Audi sloopy gear change, the wooden brakes and the rather relaxed handling!
I'm tempted....if only BMW made a M5 touring!!! Does anyone know if Alpina do an B10 estate?

Still undecided.

Yes Alpina do a B10 estate, with a 4.6 V8. Though they also now do a V8S version which is even more powerful, with 4.8 and 5.0 litre engines. Just have a look at www.alpinabmw.co.uk for what's available, though the new car pages information isn't complete. Call them for a chat, they are friendly enough.

blue colour in the s4 looks awesome, m8 had a race with one but he`s only got an impreza sport. It killed him, more than a impreza turbo does.

don`t know what they would be like head to head, apart from the s4 costing much more!!!

Gaz,

The Nogaro blue is a superb colour! I'm looking for an S4 soon and thats what I'm after. Came up against one yesterday - and Avant, dunno if anything had been done - my MY99 full decat and TEK2.5 was gaining on him, but not as quick as I would have thought - they is pretty nippy these S4's

You can pick up a v plate for around 18k, 4.5k gets you the RS4 turbo conversion at AMD, a few other bits and bobs like brakes, suspension etc and you're probably looking around 25k for 450bhp. Cheapest RS4's I've seen are still around 36k

Thanks for the link Jeff...I've got a few questions to keep them busy!
I think I'll defo. go for a pucker RS4, I have always had my eye on a RS2 and I can't believe how well they hold their money, I can't see a secondhand B10 estate so I guess they are not many around!

I do like the blue as it is Audi's flagship colour, but I still fancy a silver one with the black leather.

Anyone want a 1999 silver XJR with a brand new engine fitted under warranty only 3000 miles ago and 12 a year left on the warranty?

LOL Jeff

I dunno, he clocked me and booted it!! I think it was probably standard as I was slightly gaining - mines putting out about 270bhp so this would make sense on power to weight figs! If it was yours - no doubt you'd have buggered off and left me!!!

Either way - sure hasn't put me off getting one Now just gotta sell the scoob and house first lol!!

I have been in an S4 and RS4 and they are very different cars. The S4 was standard and drove nice and smoothly. Power delivery is lovely, it keep going from 2000revs until 7000revs and makes a nice (subdued) V6 noise. It pulled noticably faster than my S3.

The RS4 is a LOT faster than the S4. Whereas I noticed how well the S4 was still pulling at 90 in third gear, I was shocked how rapidly the RS4 swept past 100mph. The RS4 has a relentless pattern of acceleration and is a decent bit louder that the S4. It is a bit stiffer on the suspension and will certainly brake better than either the S4 or the S3 (especially after a few hard stops when fade comes in).

When we met in Buxton last April we had a few 'spirited' drives. There were a lot of times where we would pull out of sharp corners onto long uphill stretches and the S4 behind me was unable to overtake me as by the end of the stretch he had just made up the gap I had created from accelerating before him. The S4 did not handle the real tight parts as well as the S3, which also showed at times.

The RS4 on the other hand, you don't even bother trying to stop from overtaking you as it just destroys you. They are very different cars and even S4's with the K04 turbos added still do not have the high end power delivery of the RS4.

I would love either!

Funnily enough I was seriously looking at a XJR as a replacement for the Scooby.....370BHP and refinement I'm shocked to here about your new engines as I understood that they where very reliable.

There is a RS4 for sale on www.rs246.com at the mo....

Scoobyjawa

He probable booted it in 6th at 2500rpm

I have to say that my S4 still surprises me how quickly it pulls away from 99.9% of traffic on the roads...but then not many cars have 330BHP/380ft/lb. I once encountered a RS4 when I had my Scooby (MY00 with Tek) and was stunned by how much he pulled away.

Jeff,

The XJR is a beautiful car,I have had the engine replaced twice as you know. This was due to a faulty part in all of the 1998/1999 4.0L engines and a lot have been replaced with out any questions!

I always have at least 2 cars, I love driving but I also have to commute from Surrey to West London! I brought the Jag as I thought it would serve as 2 cars, a relaxed drive on the M25 and a sports car on the back roads! It doesn't really satisfy me on the back roads, it is very fast and it does handle quite well, but it is very over assisted and uninvolving!

Hence, I brought a Subaru and now I drive this too much because I'm bored of the Jag.

I will not be selling the RA so I don't want a 2 car in 1 replacement, but I want something that will be relaxing in the traffic and fun on the back roads!

I can go on a bit sorry!

Dom.

If you want the RS4 to be involving then you'll need to spend some dosh on....

Short Shift
Suspension
Brakes
ECU ReMap
Exhaust (if you've got any money left)

You'll end up with 450BHP and a very large grin......

The most enjoyable aspect of tweeked S4 ownership is that all the Saxo/Corsa/Nova/Max Power crowd don't know what it is and the BMW brigade are truly shocked when an Audi A4 (could be a TDi for all they know) totally destroys their 330Ci

Oh and the interior is 'slightly' better than a Scooby .....

I found that a quickshift made a HUGE difference to the feel and travel on the 6 speed A4 / S4 box - by the way !

Agree re S4 Avant plus bigger turbos being a far cheaper way to RS4 performance - from what I've read / heard, the 'feel' seems to be much the same. OK so you get the flared arches and sills, better brakes etc but for another £20k+ used !

Thanks for the interest!

I would defo. consider the short shift as all Audi's have quite a sloppy gear change IMO.

Not sure if I'd go for the power hike as I'm spending too much doing that on my RA...doing it to 2 cars will make me bankrupt!!

Can you get RS4's with a semi-auto gearbox?

I didn't think so, cheers Jeff! I can't quite afford a RS6 yet so I'll stick to the manuel.
