Put my deposit down this week on a new 240ps Mazda RX8 for July/August delivery , so my scooby ownership may be coming to an end.

Haven't chose the colour yet but black is favoutite at the moment:

[/img]

Deposit is refundable until the car is delivered and I get to see and drive it.

If I like it, it's bye bye STi, otherwise I guess I'll be keeping the scoob a while longer. Mixed feelings, as I love the look of the RX8 and a rotary engine that revs to 9000rpm but will be sad to be scoobless.

Looks like a good bet for residuals too, unlike the two scoobs I have owned.

Question

Roadrunner, have you checked the mazda web site? I'm sure I remember being told you could place your order on there.

Answers to questions:

Deposit is £1000 refundable.

Price is £21995 for the 240ps , £1200 for leather, £300 for paint

Fuel consumption I would expect/hope to be at least the same if not better than my STi.

The web site to pre-order isnt up yet, but any Mazda dealer should be happy to take your order

According to my dealer in brum, each dealer will only get 10 cars until next year, and they are taking deposits fast! Autocar last week predicted 'round the block' waiting lists.

Maybe I should get the red mica....

i read something in autocar saying they'd sorted the fuel consumption issue, it was down to a poor design on the older engines that the used more fuel, something about overlap?, and exhaust port design, can't remember.

these seem nice cars but not my sort of thing as they are normally aspirated aren't they.
I love the increases in power you can achieve with turbo'd cars, if i had a normally aspirated car now i'd feel a bit trapped knowing extra performance isn't easily accesable.

good luck with it anyway!

Will go down and hassle my local Mazda garage cos I registered online about a month ago.

Does anyone know if a body kit or third party body kit is going to be available within several months of the launch?

Roadrunner,

I registered on line too and still havent heard anything from that avenue.

Check out my new home in the European section at www.rx8forum.com for more info.

With ref to bodykits, the is allegedly a Mazdaspeed version out next year which will be kitted up.

Also, if you look closely at the pic of the black car you will see that this has a body kit in the shape of a front and rear spoiler, rear side skirts, aluminium fuel cap, and little plastic bits on the side vents! No details/costs published yet though.

Mate,

Hope you enjoy the RX8, from reading evo today it sure sounds like a good drive. I think I am in a minority of one who thinks the cars styling is awkward and unattractive! sorry.

Get ready for a wait.
It's been reported that the US Launch has been delayed. Instead of Mid feb it's been pushed back to mid June.

Looks good. There's a bit about it in this month's Evo -- they've allegedly solved the rotor tips issue by moving the exhaust port from the outside of the combustion chamber to the side of it. Before, the rotor had a film of oil between it and the cylinder wall as it went round, except when it went past the exhaust ports when it wasn't in contact with anything. Also meant that the oil from the rotor tip ended up disappearing down the exhaust

It certainly looks like it's been solved, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. Still, smart looking car, 240ps normally-aspirated for not very much money, and the absence of rotating weight that comes with a 1.3 litre.

Gents with a few grand myself lying around looking to be invested in a s/hand or new four door steed, I am quite interested in putting a deposit down on the slower rx8. Either that or try and find A Merc C36 AMG, my main qestion is two years ago I almost went for a mini cooper, my deposit would have meant i would have got one of the early ones, how easy is it to sell on your place on the waiting list assumming that they will be oversubscribed. I supposed with arefundable deposit I would be laughing until I test drove the car and would only have to commit to a deff purchase till then??

ADL,
If you want to put a deposit down I suggest you get in quickly. Signs are that this years allocation will go fast.
I spoke to my dealer yesterday and he has taken deposits on 9 of his 10 cars he has been allocated (ie one left).
The deposit is totally refundable up until you see, drive your car.
I am not doing this to profit etc, if the car meets my expectations I will have it. If not, there may be an option to sell my place.
Also I have been told for the early people who put deposits down there will be a programme of events over the next few months (possibly track days ), I hope so!

Err...rip of of the S2000??

It has 4 doors, 4 seats, a rotary engine and it's not a convertable. I see what you mean...NOT!

At a push the lights could be discribed as similar...

I actually agree, there was a prototype S2000 coupe, and it looks very similar.

Nice car thou, black, looks nice, although isnt there like an orange colour or gold which looks good too.

Looked at a Jap import RX8, but decide on the DC5 instead, prefer the 350Z, but it is out of my range.

I_dont_give etc, you are entitled to your opinion as much as anyone else. I like it, you dont, no problem.

However, one of the reasons Im changing is the boy racer 'Ill whip your ***' image the scoob now has, and the fact that everyone else in their max power boy racer machines who sees you in it wants to 'have a go' all the time.

O-MY-GOD....
It has so nothing like anything to do with a copied S2000 that I won't go into it any further. The ******** remark of Other Marques this year.

Green...jealous...envy!!!

I have to wait til next year for mine as the CTR still has too much to pay on the loan to switch now *sighs*

Enjoy it Mark, and I'll be keeping tabs on any reports you write here or on the RX-8 forum.

Lovely, lovely car. And who gives a monkey's whether a Scooby is faster. It's all in the feel and the driving experience, and according to Evo and Car, this motor is utterly superb. After all, the MX-5, RX-7, MX-3, MX-6, 323 ZXi and Mazda 6 are all superb cars in their class. When Mazda do a driver's car, they do it right.

Are they going to sell these in Europe too? Just think if you could pick one up as a parallel import for £16k

Thanks for all the comments

Unlike scoobs, I dont think that euro pricing will be much cheaper for the RX8 as the UK price is very competitive.

I have more or less decided on the titanium grey now...
