My mate is head salesman at Williams Mini in Liverpool so I have had good experience of both. Simply put, Cooper s hands down, Cooper handles well but has no poke. Cooper S could use more power (Hartge, works upgrade etc), but is an absolute scream to drive hard. If you bought a cooper you would always regret it when tou saw an 'S' or were overtaken at high speed by one.

I agree with you, for a brand new 'out the box' car, the clio cup is unbeatable for the money. It is very easy to get carried away with the options list on a Cooper S, my mate's place has a USED one in for 20k, has sat nav, xenons, 2 sunroofs etc.

Here's an idea try them both for yourself the only way IMO.

I went from a Cooper to a Cooper S now a Cooper S with 220hp :-)

Anyway here is a report I did when I drove the Cooper S when I owned a Cooper

I've got a Cooper S, I'd recommend it over a Cooper which seemed to be lacking, saying that, I am after the Hartge upgrade like angrybeats but the mpg is poor at about 27-28mpg.

Mr. Cooper

Me and my Mrs. are short people i.e. under 5ft 7 and we usually have the seats fwd a bit. Is it then possible to get two adults in the rear with the seats fwd?

Cheers

Just to add another idea, how about the John Cooper Special? In this months Top Gear, looks a beauty if its the same as the Cooper S with 200BHP!

Hi Mr Patel. Please don't dismiss the Clio 172/Cup. I agree that French generally = crap, but give a cup a go and you won't regret it. I've gone through 2 honda civics and a Golf VR6 to get to the Clio Cup I've now got; soundproofing aside, the renault's as good build-wise as the hondas and VW. More to the point, it's a hoot to drive, and is way cheaper (get a new one for around £12k) than a cooper s with hartge/works conversion. 0-60 in 6.5 without the whiny supercharger, too.

One word, residuals, cooper s is very strong, even with waiting lists now shortening, values will hold strong. Clio is a rolocking good car, cooper s is just that bit better. Consult ANY motoring magazine and thier grouptests on these cars will confirm this.

Fair point. Still an ace drive, though, and the cheaper starting price compensates for the depreciation a bit. Can't argue with the strength of image that the mini has.

Yep seen the options list, it's so easy to spend over 6k!!

Just getting the standard S with the exception of a mini disc player.

BTW test drove the Civic Type R....was very disappointed. Very skittish and the chassis did not feel solid enough. The engine was an improvement over VTEC's of old, but still didn't have enough torque for me.

Bloke at work has a Renault Clip Cup, looks great but has had so many problems with the electronics especially the management system which he's had replaced 3 times...he's only had the car 2 mths!
