Ah, fvck it........I'm wadding in
<splash, splash, thrash, splash, glug, glug>
A standard UK scooby would get spanked silly by an M3 - period!!! Most imports STI's, etc would get beaten above 60mph to varying degrees. Do a search and you'll see there have been LOTS of threads on this that have usually spanned several pages.........some are epic

Just been driving an E46 M3 and an STI8 around a track today, there's virtually nothing in it time wise. The scooby is more fun though (it drifts more), and a lot more go-kart like. Considering the M3's weight and comfort it's got incredible handling. J

Hello,
I've got an M5 (had E36 M3 convertible before), the M5 is miles quicker than the previous shape M3, but according to the figures in magazines (Top Gear for example), the new M3 is faster than the M5 (0-60 anyway). On Tuesday night of this week I had my first run in with a Scooby in the M5. It was an RB5. I wasn't even going to race but he was revving up, lights on amber he took off fairly rapidly. As soon as he nailed it, I decided I was going to race.
He had about 1.5 cars length before I even started moving. I was level by the time I changed to second and then I pulled away. When I changed to 3rd he either backed off slightly or mine was just a lot quicker. It was a straightish dual carriageway up to about 100. The only problem I had was at the point of changing first to second, the road turned left and dipped a bit. I had DSC on so the light was flashing there which does slow it a bit as power is cut for a fraction of a second.
However....driver, reaction times, bottle, sometimes you fluff it, etc. All have massive impact. My Mrs was crap in the M3 because she says she paniced too much about the power and looking a fool if she messes it up that most times she did mess it up! She was much faster point to point in 535 Auto. My mate (he's on here and if he replies with lies I'll name and shame him - I have witnesses ) has a Scooby. We went out with him and tested it 0-60. He only got 8 seconds. The best we had out of the auto 535 was 6.9 and that was 3 up.
Does this answer the new M3 Scooby question? No....I am 100% sure sometimes new M3's would win and sometimes Scooby's would win. Magazines are great but I don't think they reflect the real world truth. I personally can just drive RWD cars better than I can others. They just suit me. I've driven a Scooby and I am sure that someone else in a Scooby which was exactly the same would paste me. Put me in an M3 or M5 against another one and I'd think I'd have a good chance of winning.
Just MHO of course.
Cheers,
Chinnybloke

My 300BHP type R V's new M3 @ Silverstone (full GP circuit)
Walked all over it, but struggled to get past in on the hanger straight.
All down to driver in the end..
Would I swap my scoob for an M3 - you bet.

He must be a really bad driver! All you do it point the way you want to go and press the loud pedal, make a nice normal change from 1st/2nd and you'll still beat 8s

From memory its between 5.9 and 6.3 from mag to mag. I think the worst case scenario would be a 100% sympathetic 'get it moving then floor it' start with a non-brutal gear change and I'd say that would still get 7s ish - but that's been very lame!!

How did he time his 0-60? Without proper timing gear the times are going to have a massive margin for error. Having said that most people using stopwatch and speedo hugely UNDERESTIMATE their 60 time because the speedo typically over-reads (my MY97 UK scoob is about +9% according to GPS) Japanese imports could be anything depending on whether the speedo is properly sorted when it comes into the country.
PS. I add my considered opinion that 8 secs in a turbo blows goats

sorry to spoil the party, raced quite a few scoobies and also m3's in my time as a skyline owner, and to be honest a std sti would be no different to a m3 upto about 90. the the m3 ,due to gearing and bhp would pull away.
if however, you put a m3 evo against a sti on country roads, the scooby driver(as long as he can drive) would have time for a coffee.
to really spoil the party, id kick both yer ***** over any terrain ..LOL.LOL.

sprint chief,
i agree, any scoob with a blower with even a nonce behind the wheel will pull off a sub sixanhalf.
although yer average german tank driver would still be spinnin on the spot.
LOL.

i sold my evo 7RS to get an m3 E46
i know you can get an evo faster than an m3
but who cares
The fun factor of a RWD car and certainly with 343 hp is great.
put traction control off and full lock
let me loose some time against an tuned evo or scoob so be it
Maybe there comes a time i go for a 4wd car again but then i want a centre diff were i can turn more power to the rear wheels.
understeer gives me nightmares.

I have compared my Scooby (in various states of tune from 270 to 400+ BHP) to E46 M3s when the opportunity has safely arisen and the owners are usually interested. I can say that it takes a serious amount of modifications to stay with one (TD05 at 20 PSI, FMIC), and quite ludicrous modifications (TD06 at 25 PSI) to convincingly just leave one or mean you have to use part throttle or short shift at 5000 RPM to avoid going into the back of one you are following.
Massive respect for these machines and M5s. No lag, no AWD losses.
