2nd Hand Escort Cosworths-Overpriced?
#1
IS it me or are 2nd hand escort cosworths well overpriced? These beasts are getting on a bit and still fetch high prices. Are they really worth it?
Or is it the price you pay for the "credability" of owning a "cossie" ?

Not just cosworths lots of other Escorts (RS2000's etc) seem to command prices way above their abilities. Perhaps it's because of their pedigree?

I think davyboy and Rob have hit the nail on the head. Dont remember seeing one (bar Q plates) for under £10k although I have seen some advertised for mid £20k's in the past few years

Not 100% Sure why the Escort Cossie is so desirable to be honest lol...
Have you driven one?
I struggle to find a good thing to say about them other than they can be made to go fast (but always blow up anyway)
Thats one car I most definately wont be wasting my money on!

I can understand why prices would keep for mk1/2 rs 2000's but certainly not the mk5/6 ones. Would really like an esc cos cos it looks so damn nice, but I wouldnt really want to own any more fords. Parts may be cheap but they always break down!
Will be selling my beloved capri tomorrow, for hardly anything, just collecting all the receipts now and its shocking the amount of £ that's been spent.
If you had £13,000 would you really buy a Esc cos?
Are evo's the same as regards to keeping their value?
Ive noticed subarus are much cheaper and would be a wiser alternative, but id want something like an sti6, checked on auto trader and these are around £15,000 too. However compared to an esc cos, id expect the subaru to be more reliable and would also be newer than an old cos.
Howcome there are not many 320bhp+ tuned imprezas, most are tuned sti's ive seen are around 300bhp, are they much more expensive to tune than cosworths?

They may be overpriced if you just look at the initial purchase price, but if you look at the cost of ownership over say 2 years (assuming the low depreciation continues), they are probably cheaper to own than an Impreza.
As for classic status, well that is purely down to opinion. For me an Escort Cosworth is something special and much as I love Imprezas (having owned 2), it's the sight of a Cossie that puts a smile on my face.

Prices will always remain high on an Esc Cos. Apparently, there are only about 800 currently registered with the DVLA. The rest have been exported/stolen/written off/turned into rally/track cars or broken for spares. So depreciation will be very low, if any at all. It is extremely hard to find a really nice example of one that is for sale.

Big Goon
Everyone will have forgotten all about them soon.
S20what?
Only geeks on here even know what that is whereas everyone knows what an ecort cossie is and most probably hd a picture of one on their wall as a kid.
You really are a big goon

Even though I think the Scoob is all round a better car it still doesn’t command as much respect as the Cossie. And about the classic status how ever much I love the scoob I couldn’t say it is or will be a classic.

re the Impreza and classic status.
Just wait a while-unmolested ones will be minor classics and very collectable. Think how many MK1 Golf GTi's there were, how many are left now that haven't been f*cked up and how much money they now command.
The MK1 Impreza is a sure fire future classic- you'll just have to wait a bit.
I still think the Cosworth has the better image though-by a mile.

P1/Spec C/S202-3/22B ?
Esc Cos: First production road car to generate positive front and rear downforce, first to feature water injection, didn't share many parts with a regular Escort (IIRC only the doors).
How much did the Escort illustrate that there was a market for road going rally replicas? Could this have helped convince Subaru and Mitsi that they should release the WRX and Evo?
I'm biased as I loved both the Sierras and Escorts as a kid but I think you'll agree that they were very important cars and are now "collectable" vehicles.

Damn! If they all blow up then mine was obviously faulty!! Okay, it did need some fairly big things done on it (at 90k mind) before I sold it but it only broke down once when a hose burst on the M40 - and that was due to a faulty thermostat!
Owning a Cosworth isn't expensive motoring and parts aren't too excessive in price. Servicing (assuming you trust a Ford dealership!) is also the normal Ford Escort price, which is a bonus.

Buy WHY are they so desireable???
In relative standard form they are slow, uncomfortable, they dont handle, they rattle, they rust, they smoke & are a joyriders dream...
I always wanted an Escort cossie when i could first afford one, I drove 5 cars all in, 3 were known RSOC cars that were 'mint'...
Like I said above - it was all of those for all the cars it wasone of the biggest letdowns I have ever experienced when driving a 'dream car'.
There are PLENTY of better cars out there than the Escy Cossie - my view of them has changed over the last 4 years of Jap ownership (various different cars) that the Cossie owners sit there & look down thier nose that they are driving a far superior 'motoring legend' when in relality they are driving an ugly & slow reshelled Sierra.
All IMHO opinion of course - they are played up to be 10 times the car they are in reality unfortunately.
Redcop - the comment about them blowing up goes for 7 people I have known who have owned a cossie & every single one of them has had to have a rebuild...

impreza will never be a classic as there are just too many of them and they could never by any stretch of the imagination be called an attractive car..they are purchased for one thing only.ragging the nuts off them and that marvelous boxer sound...the escort cossie will allways be a headturner and i personally love the look of the old 3 door sierra cossie..from a high tech standpoint a dinasour but the look of the escort and the 3 door still snaps heads

There were 14,500 escossies made, I can't believe that there are only 800 left, it looked like there was nearly that many at 2002 RSOC national day they filled donnie track three abreast all the way round!!!

The reason why impreza's don't command the respect is because the UK is full of crappy under-powered versions. Nearly all the Impreza's out my way are WRX's with lot's of STi cars and they get respect. Cossies' are considered to be quirky collectors cars with problems that need the attention of a collector. I like 'em though - just couldn't risk owning one 'cos of lack of spare parts out here.

When they were first out autocar did a test (which I have somewhere) of the escort, rover 220 turbo and calibra turbo.
Rover had best engine worst handling.
Calibra was middling.
Escort had worst engine but by far teh best handling, some of the best they had seen.
So whoever said they have poor handling what are you comparing it to, an F1 car?? Not driven one myself but for something that has gotten so much praise from the motoring press over the last ten years they cant be wrong can they?
