Same reason as other German manufacturers- a politically correct sop- after all some of their roads are unrestricted.

And some of the 6 speed Beemers will also break this speed, albeit in 5th gear, I remember the M3 Evo, 321bhp version would do 170mph in 5th.

And if you're wondering why it's 156mph that's the equivalent of 250km/h

its a good idea- its stops them wasting R&D on top speed....which happened with bikes a few years ago and ended up with dog ugly things like haybussas that had no point or purpose other than chasing 200mph.

Wasn't it to do with restricting flat out driving 'cos they reckoned that increased acid rain? Or something loke that lol

Question

Thought it was 177mph plus (or something like that) that speed cameras couldn't catch you?

it is an environmetal issue. as some autobahns are unrestricted the potential is there to drive at very high speed and use more fuel, create more noise, more emmissions etc, so some manufactures volunteered to restrict the speed of their cars before the government introduced a compulsory speed limit on the road itself.

but come on, 155mph... in for a penny, in for a pound.

Mercedes will only lift the restriction to 187 mph on AMG cars

As the tyres currently available for the road are only safe to that level for prolonged use. Recently one of the mags (Car i think) tested the new Bently at 206 mph, this made its tyres mealt till they were hot and sticky at the end of the run and the fuel consumption dropped so low that even on its huge tank it would only do about 100 miles.

The new AMG65s are all good for about 210mph, but thier tyres are not.

Also makes you wonder why people pay 30 or 40 grand more for the likes of the AMG600 Merc when because of the restrictors the performance is exactly the same as the lower models
