what should i get next???

As mentioned in another thread i currently drive a tidy 1994 M Vauxhall Astra 1.4 GLS with a puney 82 BHP, i've had it since i was 17 and am now 20 so insurance is still a factor, i have about £4000 plus the car (which is worth about £900, on a good day) so the question is i want something with a bit more performance, good handling, and a little bit of grin factor. Now the challenge is that although the astra's c r a p, it is safe, with abs and twin airbags. Can all of you scoobynetters think f a car that fits the bill?
thanks if you can

very funny chip, no nova's, xr's, cause i am not a boy racer, my astra's totally standard, even steel wheels with no wheel trims at the mo, and its a 5 door!!! ;p

these are all pretty good suggestions, although if i can i want to steer clear of a boy racer image. I was considering an alfa 156 1.8 ts, ins group 13, same as 106 gti, anyone have any experiance with one of these. i do a spot of fishing so need a bit of room, thats the only thing stopping me getting a 106, corsa etc.

I did about 500 miles in a hired 156 1.8 round the rough back roads of Donegall. Excellent suspension, good engine for a 1.8, plenty room for your stuff. A pretty good all rounder I'd say, though the ABS warning light kept coming on randomly which was a bit worrying.

how about a 1.6/8 focus? really safe, can be made to look very smart and may just about be in your budget. plus its got space in the back and its really cheap to insure. also handles brilliantly for a car of its size.
on the downside its not the most exciting car in the world performance wise but other than that would be a great option.

i think another key question is what runnign costs can you afford? there are plenty of top bannanna performance, if a little old, cars you can afford in that budget but if you cant afford to run them properly then a futile venture

i must admit i like the civic coupes, but am strangely drawn to the alfa, as for running costs, anything i get will be a big jump anyway, as i have a m8 who gets me bits at trade price the astra has only cost me about £400, including a fan belt and 4 tyres (albeit budget ones) and its been serviced regularly.

kinell, you're only 20, get something a bit more sporty. Dont worry about boy racer images, cars are there to be driven.
I'm 30 and drive a 205 GTi
If you want a sporty car get a MK2 MR2 - my previous steed and it was great
