Question Car Maintenance - how much would you budget monthly?

I'm thinking of buying a car such as a Mondeo / Laguna / Vectra turbo diesel - and need it to be reliable, as I'll be covering 20,000 miles per year. I've got a budget of £2000 for the car.

Taking into account that the car has to be reliable, so I'll have to keep the car well maintained - how much would you budget for maintenance/servicing for the car monthly?

I'm thinking of £100 per month - is this too much? I'm hoping I'm being on the pessimistic side budgeting £100 - or am I being optimistic Bear in mind this is a run of the mill family turbo diesel. Used to have a Saab 9000 LPT - budgeted £125 a month for that, and that wasn't enough

Kevin,
I purchased a mondeo 1.8lx in dec 02 (now corrected ) ive since covered up to date, 26.5k miles.
The costs for the car were the following:-
car, 1300 quid (94 m with 68.5k), 600 quid for big service, belts, discs, pads etc to get it up to scratch, 10k services, average cost around 100 quid, big one every 30k, average around 250 quid, ive had a problem with the rear bearings that has cost me 230 quid to sort out, apart from that, nothing major except that the pollen filter (passenger side, if you look though the grates just under the window you can see a grey box, its in there) the seal went and water drips in great quantity to the passenger foot well, cost around 30 quid to fix
Total cost of motoring has been roughly 2400 quid and 26.5k including the car

Tony

That's not bad at all. Your doing astronomical miles in that - 26.5k in 3 months

Out of interest, what sort of economy do you get out of the 1.8?

DOH did i put 03, should have been 02, but so far no real problems and the car now has 95k on the clock.
If you keep your eyes open you can find a few good buys in the autotrader, check it first thing on a thursday morning on the pc and if you find one just go for it, you can only turn it down (i looked at over 6 before getting this one).
Economy out of the 1.8 petrol aint actually that bad, i go though roughly 50 quid per week in fuel, thats 500 miles on average, a good 436 miles of that is A road, 70-85mph driving, the rest is A road/town driving. Average is around 40mpg though.

Dont get a Renault if you want cheap workshop bills.
You can pick up a high mileage Vectra 2.0 DI R to S reg now for about 2k.
Or if you look hard you can get a V reg Mondeo 1.8 LX 16v for about the same money. Both tend to be quite bomb proof, and if they do go wrong the parts are very reasonable. (especially the latter)

Sounds like the Renault's out then!

Was also thinking of a VW - though have to go older for £2k. I have a mechanic I trust who does VW / Audi so would prefer them - though at this price I can't be too choosy. The Fords I have in the past have cost me more than the Saabs - I'm hoping the Mondeo's are better! TBH most of that was me being ripped off by main dealers.

Just worked that out quickly - that's almost exactly 35mpg.

Thought that was some going for 3 months!
