You'd struggle to get e decent 330d for that price, especially as you need the 'Sport' model rather than the 'SE', believe me, the Sports are much better to drive. I'd be looking at a used Audi A4 2.5 Quattro Sport, if you could stretch to it, a 330ci would be a good bet too.

If I was paying those sort of service costs I would probably get shot of it too. The main dealers must love you

re VAG cars, (Audi Vw etc) all the diesels are mapable to much higher figures so you dont need to really look for a 150 bhp, we have a 110 Octavia & that has been mapped by Jabba to 164 bhp with 393N/m of torque, the newer 130's are mapping to 190 ish, also mpg improves after mapping when driven normally but suffers a tadge when you play with it

I used to have a scoob & no bank balance so I know where you are coming from. we now have 2 Skoda Octavias, sort of Audi A3 but thousands cheaper, the diesel is a work hack but as its now mapped loads of fun & the 4x4 turbo is the play thing, mapped its over 225 bhp & regularly beets the TT's but is cheap to run. to date they've done 55000 combined in the last year & absolutely nothing has broken.
We did the cannonball this year in the 4x4 & didnt even get a rattle (finished 19th)
So you can have fun without spending a fortune. If you cant face the Skoda badge get a Seat /Vw/Audi, all basically the same, you just pay for the badges.

My advice from experience is not to bother. If you work out what you ill actually save on fuel from running a diesel etc, its not worth bothering.

For example:

Assume you do 10,000 miles per year. My STi does 220 miles from a tank, so I fill up 45 times per year at £40 per fill. Thats £1800.

Say you got a nice economical beast that did 350 miles from a tank, based on the same calc above, thats £1142.

I looked at that and though, hmm, £750 to be able to punish people all the time

Ok, your insurance maybe a couple of hundred less, but service costs on most cars are not that inviting, and not far off that of a scoob.

You will aslo be gutted in the performance drop. I sold my scoob and bought a Golf turbo for similar reasons to you. Within a couple of months, I had another scoob.

Notwithstanding all the money you'll lose in depreciation on a new car. This'll far outweigh your deprecition and service costs.

Hmmm, I know where you're coming from, but.... thats based on only keeping a diesel for one year. Who buys a diesel and chucks it in after a year? I based buying my A4 diesel on keeping it for 10 years +, so by your calculations the savings on fuel alone would be at least £7500 + . In my case doing 30000 + miles pa I'm making savings of - fuel (20 - 22 mpg V 44 - 48 mpg or 500 - 600 miles per tank, £3000 + pa) cheaper insurance (£200 pa), tyres (1.5 front sets, as an average and 1 rear pa for the A4 compared to 2 full sets for the Scoob rotating them, so lets say a saving of £300), servicing (a saving of between £300 - 600 pa in my case with my MY99 having 7500 mile service intervals) and the depreciation on the Scoob. I didnt factor depreciation into running the A4 as I plan on keeping it for over 10 years, 15 if possibe. So in this instance I reckon Im going to save aprox £40000 over 10 years on running costs alone, a not insubstantial sum which I have chosen to spend on holidays, huge amounts of alcohol, curries and and a new superbike every couple of years

You are right in a way though as I wouldnt have bought a diesel if I was only doing 10000 miles pa. I guess it all boils down to personal finances, choice, milleage and other priorities at the end of the day. Im sure my reasons and costings are flawed somehow but personal situations and expectations change. Im deffo saving wads of cash however you look at it

I can vouch for the golf tdi's I "borrowed" one for 6 months u can easily get 400miles from a tank (55-60L)if ur not ragging it. They are well built and mine didnt break down in that time as u night expect lol, it was only 2 years old(at the time) with 60k miles!! They are torquey and smooth to drive, they arnt that much fun but thats not what they are for. ther're well built and relativley spacious. basicly for a general run around they make a very good car aslong as u have use it for what it is (not a sports car)

Doofus,
In that case a Seat Leon Cupra 150PD. In my opinion a lot better than the equivalent golf - higher spec, faster, handles better, 52mpg and bang on the money.

Mans car....Lol (cheeky git)
