IMPREZA to what .. 16K or so?
Hello folks,
Since the search facility is not in use yet I thought I'd start a new thread for some advice.
I've an MY00 (DP+BB+Dawes) wagon and am entering a nightmare year for running costs i.e. it just cost me over 500 quid for a service+new pads/discs and in 6 months the scoob will cost me about 750 for a plug/belt change. Oh and I've just replaced 4 tyres at about 400 quid. We've just moved house, bigger mortgage and I'm not best pleased with shelling out all this cash
I need to be practical, it's obviously going to be cheaper for me just to bite the bullet and pay for another service than change car but I thought I might change it just before the big service is due .. I mean the car wont be worth 750 quid more after the service or in fact 750 less if I change it before. It seems like the best time to change it .... agreed?
So I'm looking around 16K for a new car (I'm guessing I might get about 8.5-9 for mine) ...
I love the scoob but hate the running costs , I'm getting a bit fed up of only appreciating it for 5% of the time I can have a spirited run so looking for a more 'mature' car (maybe mature is not the correct word).
There are only a few cars that float my boat so to speak, and it's the usual suspects
1. an MY02 wagon+new Ecutek PPP (I assume since it's only serviced once a year it's a bit cheaper).
2. BMW 330i/D .. I know, I know .. hate the image but cant argue with their engines/re-sale value .. wife wont like the fact it's RWD and can anyone tell me why 330 coupe appear to be cheaper than saloons?
3. Volvo S60 T5/D5 .. good cruiser but are they that bad on B-roads, the T5 must be almost as quick as the Scoob avove 30?
4. Gold GT TDi 150 - I only like the look of the Anniversary, kinda hard to find and at the moment I don't think they merit the high price.
What do you guys think or have you any more sensible suggestions? I want something quick, nice to drive, good quality, not more than 3 years old and a bit cheaper to run.

Oh I've ruled out 2 maybe obvious ones, more because of the missus than anything else, she hates Leon Cupra R's + the 1.8T engine has the dullest sound this side of a dyson and the Civic Type-R, she didn't like the bouncy ride, crap traction in the wet and for me when it snowed recently I was sure I'd seen a Daewoo Matiz pull into a car park when it was just a snowy Civic

You'd struggle to get e decent 330d for that price, especially as you need the 'Sport' model rather than the 'SE', believe me, the Sports are much better to drive. I'd be looking at a used Audi A4 2.5 Quattro Sport, if you could stretch to it, a 330ci would be a good bet too.

I have a special mat at the dealers .. it kind of flat with a raised cushion .. it's for resting my head on when they shaft me up the a**e with their servicing costs .. and before anybody says it yes I know I could take it to an independant and save some cash ...
Think I'd get a 330 Ci/D/SPort in 6 months for about 17K?

re VAG cars, (Audi Vw etc) all the diesels are mapable to much higher figures so you dont need to really look for a 150 bhp, we have a 110 Octavia & that has been mapped by Jabba to 164 bhp with 393N/m of torque, the newer 130's are mapping to 190 ish, also mpg improves after mapping when driven normally but suffers a tadge when you play with it
I used to have a scoob & no bank balance so I know where you are coming from. we now have 2 Skoda Octavias, sort of Audi A3 but thousands cheaper, the diesel is a work hack but as its now mapped loads of fun & the 4x4 turbo is the play thing, mapped its over 225 bhp & regularly beets the TT's but is cheap to run. to date they've done 55000 combined in the last year & absolutely nothing has broken.
We did the cannonball this year in the 4x4 & didnt even get a rattle (finished 19th)
So you can have fun without spending a fortune. If you cant face the Skoda badge get a Seat /Vw/Audi, all basically the same, you just pay for the badges.

My advice from experience is not to bother. If you work out what you ill actually save on fuel from running a diesel etc, its not worth bothering.
For example:
Assume you do 10,000 miles per year. My STi does 220 miles from a tank, so I fill up 45 times per year at £40 per fill. Thats £1800.
Say you got a nice economical beast that did 350 miles from a tank, based on the same calc above, thats £1142.
I looked at that and though, hmm, £750 to be able to punish people all the time
Ok, your insurance maybe a couple of hundred less, but service costs on most cars are not that inviting, and not far off that of a scoob.
You will aslo be gutted in the performance drop. I sold my scoob and bought a Golf turbo for similar reasons to you. Within a couple of months, I had another scoob.

Very tempted myself if I can get another job at the end of the year.

You are right in a way though as I wouldnt have bought a diesel if I was only doing 10000 miles pa. I guess it all boils down to personal finances, choice, milleage and other priorities at the end of the day. Im sure my reasons and costings are flawed somehow but personal situations and expectations change. Im deffo saving wads of cash however you look at it

Misty,
Admittedly this is main dealer prices ... I wanted views about car replacements not what I may or may not be paying for servicing
Cambelt at main dealer is about 250 ... plugs (not just an oil service) at main dealer is about 400 odd + all labour so belt+plus = £750 ish.
Any more view on the cars I mentioned?
Oh I don't mind the Skoda badge .. what they would need to do is give me the 4WD with the vRS brakes/bodykit/looks and the twin intercooler setup so I could REVO it to 270/300 odd.
Doofus.

I can vouch for the golf tdi's I "borrowed" one for 6 months u can easily get 400miles from a tank (55-60L)if ur not ragging it. They are well built and mine didnt break down in that time as u night expect lol, it was only 2 years old(at the time) with 60k miles!! They are torquey and smooth to drive, they arnt that much fun but thats not what they are for. ther're well built and relativley spacious. basicly for a general run around they make a very good car aslong as u have use it for what it is (not a sports car)

Doofus,
In that case a Seat Leon Cupra 150PD. In my opinion a lot better than the equivalent golf - higher spec, faster, handles better, 52mpg and bang on the money.
Mans car....Lol (cheeky git)
