i need as much information as possible please as i am toying with the idea of getting one to treat myself.
also a few questions..
what times are they 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile, top end etc.
what spec comes as standard?
what is the difference to the carlos sainz edition?
what can you expect for £5k?
are they delicate, especially the turbo's?
what are the residuals?
whats the insurance like?
what are running costs like?
anything to look out for on them when buying?
how expensve is it to get more power out of them?
i think that about covers it.
any information much appreciated.
thanks.

I had a 1992 Carlos Sainz version, superb car. Ran it from 23k miles to 90k with no major problems at all.
Bullet-proof build quality, 0-60 about 6 seconds, top speed about 145mph. 205BHP. Handles well, but is quite heavy for a coupe. The Carlos Sainz was the version homologated for WRC, had a larger water cooled turbo capable of far more power than standard, and a few styling tweaks.
Comes with aircon as standard, plus sunroof. Insurance and running costs similar to Scoobs, as is the fuel consumption.
Don't know about tuning them, try the GT4 Owners Club.

They wont know owt about the 6th gen gt4s as they didnt get them over the pond.
my own knowledge :
what times are they 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile, top end etc.
quick enough
what spec comes as standard?
good
what is the difference to the carlos sainz edition?
different bonnet, bigger vent for the i/c
what can you expect for £5k?
a good one, although the carlos sainz editions are more expensive so you may have to hunt harder
are they delicate, especially the turbo's?
Not particularly delicate. as always a question of owner maintenance. the turbos are bulletproof if treated properly
what are the residuals?
depreciation? not too bad as they dont look as old as they are and they are still quick
whats the insurance like?
expensive
what are running costs like?
expensive. clutch > £1000
anything to look out for on them when buying?
just the normal things for that kind of car really... smokey engine/turbo, moody modifcations, accident damage, signs of improper maintenance.
how expensve is it to get more power out of them?
depends how much power. there is a lot of potential in the 3sgte engine. for more info there are links off above site.

cheers guys.
i think the running costs are going to put me off a little bit though. i could afford the insurance but upto £1000ish for a clutch and 20ish mpg seems a little steep on my budget.
thanks anyway. keep the info coming. im still interested
by the way just realised ive posted this in the wrong section. could it be moved to 'other marques' by any chance?
cheers

The GT4 engine is rock solid, from the research I did, and capable of quite a bit more power. Only downside I was warned about, is that compared to a scoob, they are quite a dull drive.
The later shape one (L plate on) are nice and angry looking. NewEra seem to always have a couple for sale.

Ah, my pet subject, GT4's!!! I always wanted a scooby, but him indoors always wanted a GT4. As we could only afford to buy one car, and a reasonably priced GT4 came up, he won. And now I also have a GT4 - that's how much I loved it! They are both ST205WRC's, and even he was surprised by it when we got his.
Prices:
You will get a 185 for up to £5000
You will get a 205 for over £6000
You can get them for less, but they tend to be projects!
ST185
0 - 60 7secs ish UK 202bhp JDM 225BHP
E/W C/L A/C the usual sometimes sunroof
The CS has a more aggressive fuel map, grille on bonnet not a scoop, and different bumper
5K will get a CS / RC with 40,000 miles nice unmarked
The 3S-GTE engine is very strong as are turbo's if looked after
internals can take 350BHP as standard
CS / RC keep value better than standard 185
Group 16
25MPG
Smoke, rattles from diff mounts
Releif valve - £20, downpipe £250 CS version is better to tune due to
better mapping as standard
205
0 - 60 6 secs
Well specced
WRC is the Homologation edition (not a limited edition) WRC has Anti
Lag, Intercooler spray bar fitted as standard
Not a lot
Very strong
Better than the 185
Group 17
24mpg
Front suspension and the usual
Same as above - stock pistons can take 375bhp crank and rods can take
550BHP - a couple of hunderd quid well spent should see 280+BHP
IMHO The GT4 is THE best of the rally derived cars for the money. The
build quality is miles better than most, especially 10 - 12yr old examples. I know the scooby owners won't particulaly like this but my next door neighbour who recently test drove a 2004 WRX reckoned my ST205WRC which is 10yrs old was better built and drove better than the demonstrator he tested :-)
Have a look at www.gt4oc.com. Ask your questions there too, I'm sure you'll get a huge response! If you do get one, join the owners club - the discount alone makes it worth the £20. Sorry if I went on a bit :-)

Ill second the heavy quote, my friend has got a JDM ST185 RC and has done quite alot to it, and it still does exactly the same qtr mile time as my UK turbo 2000 with full decat and dawes device. The weight advantage being about 300kg in my favour! Toyota don't know how to build anything light, but it's still a bloody fast car.
My preference would be an ST205 though because they look so much meaner pref in WRC spec.
As said before go to the gt4oc website and have a look.

"Not sure about the "best raly derived car""
--Just my opinion of course :-) So what do you think is???
"just they're all a bit heavy"
--The 205 is much lighter than the 185. I put ours on the weighbridge at work and it was 1400kg with a full tank. I believe the 185 is 1500+
