330d or 530d?

Going to get rid of the Passat and buy something a bit nicer for commuting in. It'll be a couple of years old. I've always like the comfort of bigger cars, but is the 330d significantly quicker (lighter) or better handling?

Wifes uncle has recently swapped his 530d for a Merc E320CDi.
He says it's a far better car and it certainly goes better. From the passenger seat it seems to handle as well as the 530d (Non Sports version)
Not sure how purchase prices of used examples compare though.
Cheers

Lee - I think the previous E-class looks a bit dated now, and the new ones still look expensive unfortunately.
Tiggs - You're right of course, I would need some persuading to go for a 330d over a 530d. Just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be missing out on a significantly quicker / more enjoyable car.
I need the boot-space too, so 530d it is then
