Default Running in new Cossie engine

A mate has just asked me what the best way to run in his Cossie engine is. Its a complete new block, crank, pistons, rods..........the whole shabang!

Is it mineral oil for 1000miles? Then what? Where to get the stuff? Any brand favoured over others?

Also, any suggestions on rev. limits, and for what time scale.

He's just forked out £6000 on it so the last thing he needs is a bearing lunching itself again!

Cheers,

Pete

Hi Pete, recommended way is cheap crappy oil for first 500 miles, then change to semi-synthetic for next 500. Then use fully synthetic at 1000 miles ie. Castrol RS 10/60.

Reference driving it for the 1000 mile running in period, avoid motorway driving to build up mileage. Use normal roads with plenty of gear changes and bringing it onto low boost then back off. Thats the way my other half does it and a few others I know. I will be driving his that way, when his engine comes back shortly from being rebuilt!

The ford dealer in my town is a Ford Motorsport department, they do engine upgrades and re-builds for cosworths and RS cars, some very useful e-mail addresses and phone numbers here. Ive e-mailed them a few times and they always reply with some positive feedback.

Your ment to use running in oil first, then mineral then the good stuff, changing the oil filters along the way.

Wouldn't worry about it, once its been run in first time you boot it it will go bang, they all do! A mate of mine got a £4000 rebuild, ran in 2500 rpm for 1500 miles and gradually floored it, lasted a couple of days and bang £4000 down the drain.

Jeez, just because your mates did, doesn't mean that every Cossie does!!

Sounds more like a problem with the rebuild/map/fueling than the running in procedure, theres loads of cossie motors running around with 400BHP'ish

I Know of plent Big Brake cossies and they all die, you must agree they are by no way reliable, im sure there is the exception to the rule but im guessing its very rare these days.

Stop talking rubbish! I suggest you find out full facts before making such a sweeping statement.

Precisely, one of the mates had a 380BHP cossie that ran for ages the only reason it went pop was because an injector packed up, that could happen on any car even a basic focus, another friend had one that was knocking on the door of 400BHP and he never had a problem in 3yrs, the answer good maintenance. As long as they are built right and maintained properly there shouldn't be any major problems.

John.
Exactly. An injector has just packed in on my other half's Surf. Hardly a performance motor....

I ran a group A 500+hp engine in a Sapphire for 11 years (from brand new in 1990) with no problems at all.

Okay it wasn't used daily but it had 55000 on the clock when I sold it 3 years ago, I say sold but the bástard who had it still owes me every penny but that's another story.

As if scoob engines dont go bang

Put 400Bhp through your scoob and tell me how long it lasts

It's down to the builder and maintenace/setup - not the engine!

Well its being run in now. Had a few problems to sort first..........like the new block from Tickfords not having the BB in the end of the main oil gallery so oil pi55ed into the bellhousing for a while when we were figuring out the lack of oil pressure!

As for engines going pop, there's always a reason..............and I doubt its ever due to the badge the car is wearing!
