just been offered a RS200
for a stright swap for my sti 555 v limited.
the rs200 has supposedly 750bhp,this is from a reputable garage.
the thing is i dont know a great deal about them, have always liked them.
this seems like a good deal but not sure?
can these things get to 750bhp? wow not bad for a little motor
so im a bit stuck, should i let go of the scoob for ford?

Sounds cheap to me. Genuine RS200s go for serious money. The man to talk to is Richard Squire - he used to own one. I'm sure he'll pick up on this thread. As WWSD said they are not an everyday car. They can have upto 750 bhp, depending on the state of tune and boost.
I was very lucky enough to go in Richard's car in France - it was an animal - spun its wheels in every gear and jumped 2ft sideways as the tyres gripped when changing from 4th to 5th. Add to that a competition clutch that will stall below about 4000 rpm and it makes for interesting driving around town
At the time I was in the car, there was an STI V following us (we were coming back from the Ring) - we left it for dead - no contest, not even close. It is without doubt the fastest car I've ever been in. I saw an indicated 160 mph on the speedo and there was still close to 2000 rpm to go before the limiter! Oh yes, Richard was running it on low boost - christ knows what it would have done on high boost!
It is a thoroughbred racing car, which is only just road legal. Fantastic machine if you could run one as a second (or third) car, but not as an everyday machine.
I would also be prepared for big bills, servicing and getting to know your local mechanic very well

There are a few with big power, it was a rs200 that held the quickest producton car from 0-100-0 record for a good few years. If it is a genuine rs200 it should sell for about 40k upwards but these cars are race cars with a reg.plate so not the best car for day to day running.

Pat Doran ran one in the british rally cross championships until very recently that had 700 horses http://www.patdoran.co.uk/car.htm
seen it in action at croft - awesome!!
The ford rs owners club had brought 3 of them to show off too, the owners had the chance to take them round the track in between one of the races and one of them put his into the gravel right in front of the spectators - muppet!

pretty sure its a genuine rs,as ive known the chap for years.
i get the feeling that he might want some money as well as my car,but im willing to do this as id love something different,as you dont see any of these around.
he has another one running about 250bhp,but he wants to keep that one.
i cant imagine what 750bhp would feel like, and these cars are so small scary really

Your're not wrong - there aren't many cars I've been in that I would describe as scary - but the RS200 is one of them (John Felstead's Westfield Cosworth was another ).

Ditto to what carl has said, more than likely a copy, a few years back there was a warning in the RS owners club about a shady RS200 lookalike, also a company called KaRA was doing the moulds and a spaceframe to which you bolted cossie running gear. Remember that a dog of a real one will fetch (no pun intended) around £35-£40K with a mint one fetching in excess of £100k. The one that had the 0-100-0 record was modified again by it's owner Davy Jones (I think that's his name - the guy who invented Grand Theft Auto, Lemmings, etc with an engine bill of £25K to get it to 702BHP on Elf Turbo fuel, he was then offered £90K allegedly and for the engine bill to be paid!! Jeremy Clarkson dumped it into a potato field at Crail raceway in Fife on only his second corner because it was so powerful!

I'd get over to http://www.rsownersclub.co.uk/ and ask them for advice on what to look for by way of authenticity marks etc.

As Chris has said they are seriously scarey cars and definitely NOT a daily driver at that sort of power. The one that I owned 'E900 BAP' was only 570 bhp and 475 lb/ft and that was more than enough.....
One thing to check is that the second "gear lever" used to switch between 2 and 4 wheel drive is in place. Mine had been locked into permanent 4 wheel drive and was a complete pig to drive during low speed manouvering.
If you are considering getting it then speak to Geoff Paige at Mountune he knows more about these cars than just about anyone.
They are not "cheap" cars to maintain though. The BDY engine is different to any thing else in the BD series and you cannot swap say a BDT into the car as it just won't fit.. Oh and an engine rebuild can cost upto 20K quid
Oh and one other thing.. If you have large feet forget it
I wear size 7 shoes and even then I had to drive it in racing boots as the pedals are so close together that regular shoes cause you to hit the accelerator when you go for the brake

craigdmcd,
You seem to know a bit about Dave Jones record breaking RS200. Do you go to "Greersport" by any chance? This is where the car was kept and where Bill Greer did the work on it. Bill's son Colin was the one who did most of the driving. Dave Jones also had another car he kept at Greersport until it was sold last year, a 1000bhp Jun Skyline.
The RS200 scared the crap out of that big blowhard J. Clarkson. It took ages for the repair bill to be paid when he crashed it.
It's an awsome car but you just could not safely drive it on a public road.

I wouldn't swap, unless you get an expert to look this RS200 over. It's probably a copy running nearer 200bhp and worth well under 10K. If it's geunine it should be worth alot more than your Subaru? I did see it somewhere that these cars with around 600bhp can do 9sec 1/4s. Put your car against it and if you don't watch it disapear at a ridiculous rate of knotts, then it can't have the power it claims. (which is where the money would have gone)

I looked into RS200 out of interest a while back, apparently some of the replica's are quite tastey, but the real ones can go for a fortune, and if it's running 750bhp that is serious power, stupid power, that's the sort of power that pikes peak rally cars run. Anything that has had that much power squeezed out of it is going to need lots of pro tech attention I would say - engine rebuilts etc.
They are an awesome car, someone was saying they held production car record for 0-100, I was under the impression they still held the record for 0-60, they're a seriously quick car, I would love one. But like everyone has said, I doubt it will be an easy car to live with, and will probably cost a fortune to keep on the road, and certinly not something you could go to the shops in.
I can't beleive I am going to say this, but I would say a lightweight stripped out racing car with 750bhp would be quite a dangerous car to drive on the road. Great to show off at track days with though!

Its possible he wants to shift it as no-one else wants it and he wants to get rid. Unlikely I know, but with everyone saying "Its a copy" and "Its not genuine" without seeing it could be wrong and Mr. Hello might be turning down a bargain.
Just a thought.
