Soft top for summer...
I'm thinking of buying a cabriolet for next summer.
Does anyone have any experience of Golf Cabs, or Escort Mk5 Cabs?
Any others I should look at? Looking at spending £1500 max.
Cheers

Well for years and years I always wanted a golf gti cab. Anyway a few years back I bought one and it was OK but got bored of it very quickly. The extra weight used to stiffen every thing up does affect the performance, top down was nice, roof up it was a very average drive. In the end the girlfriend had it as I found it quite boring. Personally I dont like cabbys with the B-pillar as found on golf, escorts etc. but prefer something like a 306 cabrio which looks alot better IMHO but dont think you'll get one within your budget.

I've got a green Rover Cabriolet 216 twin cam (Honda engine) with electric roof & windows that i'm looking to sell. Engine & box spot on but bodyworks not the best. Looking for £600 MOT'd until October & quite happy to re-MOT as the car is mechanically sound
Would make an ideal project for the winter if you're anygood at bodywork

1500 squids will get you a baggy old hatch with the roof chopped off a la 205/Ren 19/Rover 216 etc. All well and good but they are a miserable drive and about as cool as Peter Stringfellow's thong.
For that money I'd go for something classic that isn't going to be a mortgage job - say an MG midget, X1/9, Alfa spider. You're not going to threaten a 911 off the line but it will be a warming driving experience. I think with the 80's hatches you'll very quickly realise that you are in a desperately average basket with no roof.
If you have to do the normal thing - go Golf. It will not leak, creak, rattle, groan or go wrong as often as the others.....

For that price, definetly aim for an old british sports car, you'll get a half decent MGB roadster, great laugh to drive, RWD and quite cool, or a Triumph spitfire, there are a few variations on these, but definetly look at a late 70's early 80's car with a bit of style, I say, and if you buy it in the winter, you'll probably spend 25% less than if you bought it in the spring/summer......
