Question Accord Type R. Wadda ya think?

Been looking at the Accord Type R as an interim car. Not interested in an ITR as it's to small or a CTR cos they look like shopping trollys.

Does the R have the best suspension of the versions etc.

What do you think?

TIA

I've got an ATR had it since last year, When I was deciding to get an Type-R i test drove all 3, the CTR to me never felt as raw and exciting as the ITR or ATR also it looks like a shopping cart and is not as rare as ATR or ITR.

The main reason I got the ATR over the Teg is that I couldn't find a Teg with LOW millage....no regrets tho the ATR is a FANTASTIC car with razor sharp handling....the only complain is that due the rail-like handling you end up taking corners quick and this 'kills' the tyres......

2 things to note about the ATR's:-

The 5th gear syncro prob check all the gears work fine even at high RPM.

Tensioner - Get it checked as these are prone to break, if it does it is covered by the warrenty if the car is still in warrenty.

....mate get a good one and you'll be rev-happy mate.....

I believe you can tune them quite well using the Mugen kit. Get one! The one I drove was a very nice metallic purple (nearly black) and it was lovely.

The H22A is one of the least tunable Honda engines. The H22A found in the Accord is I think, The same one as found in the 5th generation Prelude Type S which has a slightly more aggressive cam profile, manifold (port and polish) and slightly larger intake box and chamber diameter. It's a very dificult engine to modifly. Very. Power loss is not uncommon with many mods (especially on the exhaust front) and a CAI modification to the engine often results in a very nice engine note but also power loss.
An American company by the name of http://www.unorthodoxracing.com make a very nice Underdrive pulley which, as long as no Big Stereo system is being used work very well and see about a 7hp gain. New Gates belts are needed also because the standard Honda belts won't fit.
Apexi Vtec controllers look the biz and with very careful rolling road tuning can help bring about a little extra hp. Mugen gear is beautiful. But costs serious money and again the gains aren't much.http://www.jacksonracing.com in the States made a nice supercharger for a few K that worked on the 'ordinary' H22A. However because of the increased compression ratio of the Tuned H22A the chances are that it would go, sooner or later....Boom. Take a look at the heat insulating gaskets though, heard very, very good reports about them.
To be honest NA is not the way to go with this engine. It's expensive and often dissapointing. A turbo could be the answer but then again you may aswell buy a turbo car but thats a lot of money for about 50hp (at a guess).
Answer? If you really want more power at a good price think about Nos. Or, you could think about improving the handling with new suspension. Some very tasty gear out there for that.
Good Luck.

I got one!!

I love it to bits!! Everytime I look at it I think it is an amazing looking car. And when I drive it the smile is permanently on my face. Changed cars quite a lot recently as I got bored quickly. Not going to happen with this one.

Does not drive like a bigger car - very light and agile. Cornering is a dream (although the Avon ZZ1's I have on the front of the car are poor in the wet and need replaced with Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's I think)

Recaro's are brilliant, and the short shift is a dream. Mine has the 5th gear issue, but it only happens when you are at 6000rpm+ and you try to shift it quickly into 5th.... If I was 6000rpm+ in 4th, I'd be 120mph or so! I tested it with a blast in 3rd then stuck it quickly into 5th... slight crunch. A slow gear change even at high revs is fine. Engine sounds tappety as standard.

Silver ones are rare. I got red as I think it's the "sportiest" looking colour. The Pirates black did not appeal to me much... it's the purple/aubergine one,but I looked at one, and in the light it looked almost brown which put me off....

Awesome cars Buy one!

Mike

my standard '00 ATR

PS - if you buy one, change the horn! They are embaressing!!

Funny isn't it? You've got to do this sort of delayed shift otherwise, like you say, you get that lttle crunch. It was the same on the Preludes. Hondas mustn't have been worried about it as I don't think there was ever a recall.

my next door neighbour has one and it doesn`t have the high spoiler is this correct. It`s a W reg and he was told by the dealer that it was an option????? It doesn`t bother him `cause he likes the stealth approach.

yeah, options were;

...Most have stickers, spoiler & mats, but I wanted one with the Air Con and Fogs too which is why I took longer to find one (& travelled from Aberdeen to Belfast to get it! )

I reckon you should go for it Ian - the ATR is a cracking motor.

Oh, and you'll have to take me for a spin to return the favour

(Getting rid of the mondy or keeping that too?)

                Hi mate

Prob get shot of the Mundeno cos I think the ATR should be a reasonable daily driver. And of course your welcombe to a spin as soon as I get used to a quickish FWD car again

Going to have a look at some this w/e

You've got synchro problems - quite common on high performance Hondas, tegs suffer as well. You are lucky that it's 5th gear thats the problem on yours as, like you say, not really an issue in road driving.

They can go on any gear at any mileage though, and it's a feckin expensive job to get sorted if not under warranty.

Best way to check is very high rev, quick gearchanges and look out for the dreaded crunch.

Good fun car with a cracking chassis for a fwd saloon

Edited to say it's fine as a daily drive too.

mine's not scrappy or high mileage

Mine has been described as "mint" by those who have seen it The only poor point is the 5th gear synchro, which has not affected my driving so far (and prob never will), other than that it is a spot on motor.
