Want something sensible to run (as well as the Type R), a load lugger for the dog, and economy to save money on the daily commute.
Wife has got a Mk2 MR2 - that we will be getting rid of.
What are peoples opinions on a 97/98 A4 Avant SE TDi? Or any equivalents which will be worth looking at? (money saved on petrol/insurance will cover a loan to get the car!)

will have a look at passats (also considering the Octavia) - are the passats as well specced up as the SE variant of the Audi (i.e. climate, electric everything, CD changer etc)?

My best man has a Passat and I'm very impressed with it's performance, despite having his whole family and me in it!! ![EEK!](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/eek.gif)
It's only a TDI 130, but it has a lovely torque curve!
If I was looking at a load lugger, the Passat would be on the list (even above the A4 just from a value for money perspective)
I've been in an Octavia Estate with the TDI engine and due to the beige interior, it felt much roomier inside when compared to the Passat.
I'm guessing with the same money as the A4, you should be able to get a newer Passat, and an even newer Octavia!

As Andy and yourself have both said, the Octavia is well worth considering - not just on value for money terms (newer car/good spec for the money), but the boot is roomier than the A4. I had an A4 Avant Quattro and the Octavia 4x4 I have now is much better in that respect. In fact its a better all-rounder than the A4. Honest.
