VAG 1.9 TDi engine - how long does it last?

I mean what kind of mileage are people seeing before it gives up?
Saw an Octavia TDi go for £1500 at the auction the other day (ie a quarter of private money) with 205,000 miles on the clock. Reckon there'd be any life left in it?

As per usual it depends on the history - but I wouldn't risk THAT high...
You just thing about the amount of wear on everything else, forgetting about the engine

I was in an A4 1.9 TDi taxi recently which had 285k on it, and the guy said he'd had no major problems with it and it was still returning 50mpg!
As has been said, if its been properly serviced it should have quite a bit of life left in it.

The older 110bhp motors are reckoned to be a bit more robust than the newer PD motors, as they are not as highly tuned and so less stressed.
I've heard some reports (from Honest John's website ... so read into that what you will) that injector wear on the PD motors can result in premature wear of the cylinder liners ... this happens because the worn injector starts putting out a high-pressure "stream" rather than a fine spray, and the stream acts like a fluid cutter on the liner!
I suppose with injection pressures at 30,000psi, it's possible
However it's only been found on engines with 150,000+ miles.
