Which car would you buy if......
you had a budget of between 20 and 35K to spend, the car would be garaged, and only used on high days and holidays, been thinking along the lines of a ferrari 456, or cheaper DB7, or Maserati 3200gt, something along those lines, ie, a 'special' car, not something like a type 25, cos it wouldn't be only for me, it would be mothers cash buyin it, and I'd just have the occasional drive, and keep it clean and swissol it!!!

Aston and Ferrari have running costs associated with £100k+ cars..pretty scary. 328 cheaper than 348 (which needs engine out belts), but neither really comfortable to drive for 'Mother' I'd say. Boxster 'S' a damn good idea...modern, safe, classy and fun...just watch out for rip off services when you are told brake discs and pads need replacing every year...robbing 'stards...is a problem if stored outside though..brakes rust and sieze slightly at the least provocation.

911. Just a nice, tasteful, 911 C2. Special to drive, look at, and listen to. Oh, and it doesn't cost the earth to run, there's always a good secondhand demand, and they're even sensible on insurance.

Insure her life and the car. Buy something with too much power and no brakes. Makes sure you are in her will and wait for it...<bang>. Here comes loads of money, then you can afford to buy a decent car.. that's my suggestion.. but then I am a bit EVIL I suppose
Failing that a CLK AMG merc or E55 AMG, de badged easy to drive

How about a nice rare brabus SL or SLK
For more insperation, click here: http://www.amtleasing.co.uk/specialist/stocklist.html
If i had to have a toy i would strongly consider a mini cooper S with various works editions such as seats/wheels/brakes then get the sat nav DVD TV cruise tints blah blah, then drop it in at BRM for a near 300bhp conversion, then you would have a bit of a rare monster, but that would stretch the budget

She'd probably warm to a Jag XKR or a Porsche Boxster. Both nice cars to drive and the Jag has a fair bit of oomph.
Ferrari / Noble / Aston / and the 911 might be a bit much for her, both driving it and maintaining it.

Thanks for the ideas guys, The hole idea of this car would be to replace a very rare and hard to maintain/restore car that has been in the garage for about 11 years, dad was doing it up until his untimely death 3 years back, I don't know if I have the enthusiasm for it, hence the possible sale/replacement.
We'll keep thinking thats for sure!! I'll keep ya posted!
Hadn't considered the XKR, kinda like a poor mans aston!!
Forgot to say, a very good friend of mine is morkshop manager to a 25 bay sports car garage, so servicing would not really be an issue, i'm sure he could do it for me, at a reasonable rate, or even if it had to go through the firm at least I would know it had been done properly!!

Unless your mother is a car nutcase, she'd soon get pretty hacked off with anything remotely exotic. Try parking a Rarri in the multi storey, getting your friends into, teasing a recalcitrant open gate box into first on a cold morning before all the fluids have warmed - you get the picture. Even if someone is helping to mitigate the maintenance costs, it will still be a lorra lorra cash to keep a 328/348 in good nick.
My cash would go on either a 996 C2 Porker (nice low mileage 2000 W with toys from a specialist), or a Boxster S - facelift from the dealer. Predictable I know, but they probably offers the perfect compromise between sensible 5 days a week pootling and weekend lunacy in the same car that you can get.

Cold Turkey, it's a 1953 Ford Comete, ie, Ford chassis, with Facel metalon bodywork, who later went on to become Facel Vega, and make cars in their own right. pics below.
Don't wanna porsche, it's gotta be something more special than that!!

Brendan,
Are you sayin it's ugly??
Cos when it's finished i'm sure 99% of people would think that it was stunning, it won awards for style when it was new!!!! And it cost more than the aston of it's era when new too! maybe that means we should get the aston then eh!!

How about a red E-type soft top? Assuming that its anything up to the money you specified and you don't have to spend all of it.
It used to be the car I really loved in the early 70's and I have a friend who has lovingly restored one - on seeing it I really remembered the feeling I had as a child of wanting one!
I guess it was a bit of an icon and I still have a soft spot for it!

E-type is a good suggestion too, though I worry about their mechanical abilities.
Do you have any idea whether you, er your mum would prefer something new and shiny or old and classic?
I always remember living by a private girls school in Richmond, and there were constant queues of parents in Rangies, Volvos, Mercs etc, also a few Porsches, but in the summer the guy who dropped his little darlin' off from an IMMACULATE dark blue Aston DB6 was the real showstopper.

Really needs to have modern reliability, or else I might as-well restore the bueaty thats in the garage, (in my eyes!) so rules out classic astons and jags, that would be like replacing one relic with another!!
