I like the look but my bruv had a company car for one. ****box aparently, general concensus across the company.

Glorified Mondeo (same chassis) and squeeks and rattles everywhere.

They do look very nice though for a mid sized saloon.

Do like the estate (or is it a wagon?) version - am I right in thinking there's an AWD 3.0 twin turbo diesel version? - Might be tasty

Had a head to head sprint in the Impreza (245bhp) against a well-driven 3.0 a couple of years ago on an empty stretch of dual carriageway. Up to 90 there was very little in it (2 car lengths).

Dont believe the knockers.

They dont rattle and squeek, each car is driven through a multitude of tests before leaving the plant, one being a squeeks and rattle test, no car ever leaves the factory with a squeek or rattle. And if your X Type does develop one of these faults you get it fixed.....FREE.

As for it being a Mondeo, yes it does run on a similar floor pan, but thats where the similarity ends, do they make a four wheel drive Mondeo ?

Go test drive one, and see for yourself what they are all about.

I can say for a fact that the are built well, I know, because Im part of the team that builds them.

... exactly what I thought - buy an 18 month old one with 1 years warranty extension (giving you 2.5 years) and you can get a really good deal on a 3 litre.

As for 'but its Mondeo based', from a chassis point of view that's a good thing, surely !?

I'd have one .

Exactly, the current Mondeo is a great car, the only thing letting it down it cheap badge and dull styling and image. The X-Type addresses these issues.

Saying that I'd rather have an A4 or 3-series over an X-type anyday - I think the XJ and XK series are the only proper Jags - and theyre NICE cars!!

Nothing wrong with the Mondeo chassis anyway.

I was thinking about this at the weekend. Used S-types are similarly affordable, but they have much more of the old man image IMO

Your right there is nothing wrong with a Mondeo chassis, infact its known as the Euro platform and is used on other models other than the X Type and Mondeo, Volvo, Mazda, and soon to be new Freelander to name a few...

If it aint broke, dont try to fix it..

I bought one today!

It's a 51-plate 3.0 Sport in black. Looks very smart, drives well too. Only bad thing about it is the stereo!

I like the black ones a lot. Nothing wrong with the Mondeo chassis. I reckon the ST24 handles like a dream. So what sort of wonga we talking then for one that spec TopBanana?

It looks fantastic - it has black leather and a black mesh grille too, without a hint of chrome anywhere. I'll post up a pic once I've washed it!

It's got 60-something thousand miles on it and I bought it for a whisker under £10k - a good buy I reckon! BTW, there isn't a single squeak or rattle anywhere in the car.

I had the 3.0 V6 in my ST220 - it's a fantastic engine. Great engine note, loads of low down grunt, but peak torque is at 5000rpm. Revs cleanly to the limiter.

Yes, the Jag has some similarity to the Mondeo but the latest Mondeo is actually the better car. As for AWD, drive an ST220 and tell me it needs it. It doesn't - a very unobstrusive TC system and the linear power delivery of the engine means traction is great in dry conditions.

I just went for a spirited drive on some local wet leafy roads - it's a great car for British days like this

I've just got a 2.0D company car.

Nice to drive - good grunty motor...
Classy interior compared to rep-mobile...
Nice steering weight and feel

BUT

Wallows through corners
**** stereo
Seats are uncomfortable
Rattles already

LOL

Update:

The engine's making a nasty noise at half RPM - luckily it's still under warranty! I wonder if they'll give me an XKR as a courtesy car

No, I'll ask an engineer when I pick it up. I think it was something to do with the valvetrain though as it was one knock every two revs.

Impressed by their customer service though. They recovered the car, gave me a courtesy car, and agreed to pay for all repairs within 24 hours. Not bad.

I've recently got rid of ours, 2.5 sport. Was one of the first made, 3 1/2 years old. Sold privately got 45% of original value, just before xmas, its a bad time at moment to sell any car. I considered 45% pretty good. Which Magazine has them as 2nd best in class behind Merc C class, better than BMs for depreciation.
It broke down twice, coolant pipe falling off bottom of radiator twice.
Brakes are really bad, B road action is out, they fade too quickly.
2.5 lacks torque, have to rev it to get going. 4Wd is good though
