Default Pugs

Right, I'm now collecting them! I have a 1.9 (rough as F**k - needs an engine rebuild) and a 1.6 (better body, needs some work/ engine probably shot / head gaskets etc, but older). What you reckon?

The 1.6 is shorter geared making it a bit manic if you do that, makes a 1.9 quite potent! However it reduces top speed and makes rev's at motorway speeds rather high.

A phase 1 and phase 2 aren't directly compatible as the phase 1's had a BE1 gearbox (lift up reverse and next to 1st) where the phase 2 is BE3 (no lift up and reverse below 5th). The BE3 is also regarded as stronger.....

Yep

You could also transfer the rear beam and hubs so you have discs all round, the interior, central locking, leccy windows etc. Though TBH the phase 2 is a nicer car to have altogether......

The 1.9 is quite a bit rougher than the 1.6 so I think I'm gonna whip out the engine and shove it in the 1.6. Could I get away with changing just the block and keeping the rest, such as the rad etc?......Thanks for the advice chaps!

Yeah, but you will need to carry over the oil cooler, early 1.9 had an air oil cooler that fitted just in front of the rad, the later ones were water based oil coolers...........

yep the 1.9 fits straight in. I had a silver 205 gti 1.6 and the engine blew at 125mph coming back up the m5 with origional 64k on the clock. .

So took it to a local garage and he's sourced me a 405 sri engine, which is basically the same as a 205 1.9 but less likely to have been thrashed + less milage...after that the car went like stink.

Sold my mint silver 205 GTI about 4 years ago with 70k on the clock for.........£400 (wish i would have kept it but i had no room to store it )

Its actually different. Similar, but not the same. The SRi from the 405 is more built towards torque than bhp.......
