Changing from hi to low ratio in Jeep Grand Cherokee?
Hi I've just bought a 1993 Jeep grand cherokee for the winter months....
I bought the car from Swiss Germany and the owners manual is in lovely German!
Can anyone tell me how to switch from hi to low ratio?
Cheers,
Plums....

It's probably something to do with that stubby leaver next to the main gear stick marked Hi - Lo.
If it doesn't go in you might have to roll back a bit and try again. You might have to do this a few times before it works. This is what I had to do in a Landcruiser.

Cheers Darkstar!
Thing is I tried it last night....
Put it in N and tried to change into Low...
Made a horrible grinding gearbox sound didn't seem right?
Does the engine need to be turned off?
Cheers,
Plums.

No, from what I remember you have to reverse the car a little, stop and try to put it in low. You might have to leave it in gear but this was in a manual not an auto so be carefull! The problem was that there isn't a syncro so the cogs have to be lined up.
If all else fails I could translate the German instructions.

Might be better off putting it in Park rather than neutral or do it with the engine turned off if it grinds, the autobox tends to freewheel in N if you try to shift the transfer box beween high and low whilst stationary (thus the grinding - no syncro), usually ending up getting stuck inbeween.
Normally if I try shifting my Landy (auto) into LR - it works best if I'm in park, or with the engine off, or doing it whilst crawling below 5mph.
But different trannys have different shift procedures, some can do it on the fly, some can't (although mine isn't supposed to work whilst moving - it does, and is easier to shift, so work that one out ). Some can be stubbourn to engage due to lack of use.
As long as you don't go forcing it into gear or try shifting at anything above 5 mph you won't do much harm. Worst case is getting stuck between High and Low, with a queue of traffic stuck behind you and can't get into either! (talking from experience here )

Make sure your stationary, select neutral, and then change from Hi to Low, Bingo. You can usually go from Low to Hi without stopping as long as your not doing more than 30mph.

I've had to change from Hi to Low in a Landy in 3 ft of water in a flowing river as it wouldn't grip on the river bed. If they wanted me to turn the engine off I would have had water up the exhaust in seconds.
That's got to be the most ridiculous bit of advice I've ever heard.
