Smile Old Banger wanted

Following on from the nice cars, why do we bother thread, and in addendum to my Clio 182 vs Civic type R thread of a few weeks back...

We've settled on the 182 (unless something else comes along) but on top of that I've been allowed a budget of £1000 to get something to run alongside it for work and that.

Now most of my miles commuting is motorway and I'm looking for something with a big, reliable engine to make the journey more pleasant than it is in my current ride (Saxo VTS).

For that sort of money I'm thinking of an early 90's 328i or 528i with about 100,000 on the clock and a FSH. I think that's reasonable to expect but has anyone got any other ideas?

Hi Jim

No MOT etc I've been working on it but I'm running out of time & light, it's too big for my garage with the capri still in there I have 2 of these but I'm keeping the other one

It's going good thanks Been doing alot of organising lately when I'm not working on the cars because it's now less than 8 months 'til I get married You fancy a pint at that pub near your house one evening?

Cheers Paul but the last thing I need is something I need to w**k on right now.. I always fancied one of them Carltons too. Mind you, I used to fancy a Scimitar once.

What Capri you got? Fancy selling that? I could go for Capri number 7 on my list

Paul, I've said it before and I'm not afraid to say it again, I rate the Capri as one of the best driver's cars ever. I've had 2 three litre motors a Mark II Ghia and a 3 Series S. Both lovely cars. The X reg 3 series I paid £200 for and sold it after a crash for £150, it was the last production year of the 3.0s before the 2.8i took over. You see them on ebay now in all sorts of condition but typically asking around £750 for a shocker and £3500 for a minter. Wish I still had mine, and definitely a sound investment for you that one

Goonasuk.. No ta mate, thanks but really looking for something RWD and bigger powerplant.

I had a 2.8i for a while and that was fun but I wished I'd gone for a special because of the lsd

You can pick up a good gsi for that sort of money you want to spend and they handle very well and have a lsd as standard 204bhp on tap too

For motorway mile munching I'd recommend a Saab 9000. Big and comfy and safe. Probably get a decent 1996 2.0 Light Pressure Turbo for around a grand.
