Which soft-top?
Trying to be unbiased and under 18k ,don't need it for carrying anything so not bothered about too many creature comforts but not as extreme as a catheram,but still a good drive,my choices and comments;
Toyota mk3 mr2/mrs (not enough grunt?)
Honda s2000 (no torque)
Lotus elise (engine reliabilty)
Vauxhall vx220 non turbo (??)
Bmw zm3 Roadster (chassis dynamics)
Tvr Griffith/Chimera 5.0 (reliability)
Not including Porsche boxster or Audi TT or mx5(not my cup of tea)
Which one do you think guys?Maybe another i forgot?

TVR Chimaera 5.0, 0-60 in 4.2, 0-100 in under 11 - THAT sound..... only car on that list with true supercar performance.
Ok not as reliable as the Z3 for example, but that doesnt mean it WILL break down
And are you a petrol-head or a hairdresser?

The honda seems quite special but i fear i may tire of the revvy character of the engine. In my opinion lotus built the ultimate road going 2.0 na engine in the lotus gt3.
i'm thinking maybe vx220,lotus elise 111s or mr2?
tvr would have to be around 8-10 years old which i feel maybe a little over the hill.

Well, actually, the MX5 would win hands down - but you ruled that one out for some reason?

Oh, yes, TVR's are total cr4p!

Its got a 90k warranty so I shall see if i can have the first unit to fail (apparently there's been none so far???!!!). All the owners on the s2k forum say thats how its meant to be driven.. who am I to argue. Power is 6.5k-9.2k

you will be most impressed by the engine, gearbox and more importantly the handling and feel.....the car is very communicative.

The MX5 will undoubtedly be the nicest car of that lot to drive (certainly not the fastest by along way!) - I think you would be foolish not to give it a test drive at the very least.
The TVR will sound great and make you grow big ***** untill it breaks down - and it will break down....
The Honda I can't comment on, but I would love to try it - it was very high up in the recent Top Gear customer satisfaction survey (may have even been first?)

Second the 325ci.
Strangely I was in this EXACT predicament 2 weeks ago with £18k to spend on a convertible and list was simular to yours.
I was close to the S2000 but would of bolted a supercharger onto it. Boring in standard form I found.
The new Z4 was nice but had to put £8k to it to get the 3.0 one.
Guess what I got just over budget.... Jagaur XKR Convertible with 20" Paris wheels, 50k on the clock, every extra possible. It is gorgeous and phenomanal power in it. ANd that V8 burble is superb!
Jagaur XKR or XK8 everytime. Lovely metallic grey one on PistonHeads.Com.
Jon.

thanks for the comments guys,
think i've got it down to the s2000 or vx220.(maybe mr2)
325ci sounds nice for cruising and stuff but i want more of a racer.
I don't like the look of the mx-5 it's pretty slow and i'd rather have a mr2.
Elises are nice but the k-series engine is prone to HG failures.

Before you buy something else, go drive a TVR, griffith or chimaera. Either TVR is one step from a Caterham, whereas an S2000 is one step from a Boxster - a big difference. Bet you'll change your mind!

Someone has to stand up for the elise
From what i have read, the hg problem is usually caused by a water loss elsewhere in the engine, ie a split pipe or loose hose somewhere. The k series does not hold much water, so a little loss can cause the hg failure
Its a good idea to keep an eye on the header tank.
But fun wise......... its hard to beat

LOL is that because your an old fart and are quite happy to sit at 2500rpm and let the turbo do the work YAWN!!!!!!!!!!

How about a hardtop - 307cc 180? maybe some people on here would call it a hairdressers car but it is actually longer and wider than a scooby! (albeit only 180bhp and 1.6 tonnes of car!)
