New Big Saloon for father in law
My father in law is looking for a replacement to his Rover 75, which he loves. He is a car numptie and is seriously considering a Kia something-or-other He likes BIG saloons - previously he has a Passat which was "a bit small". Budget will be approx. £15k - what can I suggest that will still have a bit of street cred but will satisfy his waft-lust?
Currently the only thing I can think of is a Legacy saloon ;-)

Lexus GS300 or 430 if you can find one (430 unlikely for £15k though). I drove my Uncles GS430 over xmas. Lovely car. Big, powerful (esp the 430), quiet, comfy, all the toys, decent handling, very hard to fault it really. Uncle gets fantastic customer service too. I'll certainly consider one when I'm old(er)

Audi A6 4.2 - very few made, but you should just about get one for £15k. Failing that, a 2.7 biturbo should fit the bill.
S-Class Merc? Very large, very well made, amazingly affordable at that price range. Servicing's not too awful, esp if you use an independent specialist.
BMW 740 is another option - thirsty, but excellent to drive, and loads around at that price.

With the XJ being last of the old shape will also come with fixed price serviceing. Something you wont get on the BMW or Merc.
I think its something like £255 plus VAT per service and then £490 inc Vat for the big one at 70,000 miles

Definitely tell him not to get the Kia. A mate at works friend has one and a major service (including cambelt) has just cost him £1200 and there was nothing untoward required.
These cheap cars eh!!!

My first choice would be an Audi A8, either the 3.7 or the 4.2.. I would also consider an older shape BMW 7 Series, 3.5 or 4.4..
Both cars can be had for reasonable money and considering the spec, reliability and build quality that you get they are bargains IMO.
Cheers,
Grant
