Default ***Pug 406 SRI Turbo Oil Pressure Question***

Any help on this appreciated.

Is the oil pressure gauge meant to read something just as you start the car up or is it supposed to show a reading when driving?
The car I'm looking at shows no oil pressure on the gauge when I took it out last night for a spin. The guy said that it was only meant to check the pressure on turning the key.....but remebering my old Pug GTI the gauge used to read all the time??

cheers,
Al.

It should give a reading as soon as you start it up, with a slight increase when driving..

Not much point in having a gauge that doesnt tell you information whilst the cars being driven!

Sounds like a duff gauge and/or engine!

Oh well, will have to give it a miss then, wondered why it was so cheap!!!!
The oil pressure went right up on ignition then right back down to zero when engine started.
Cheers guys.

It should flick up on startup to indicate the guage is working, then when driving cold it should be past half way - as it warms up it will normally drop just below the middle, but certainly not to zero.

Would suspect it has a duff bottom end or head gasket problem.

My 406 V6 had an oil LEVEL gauge that operates just as you say. Sounds normal to me.

That's what I was thinking and not a pressure gauge. It's quite common to have a level gauge on modern peugoets

Cheers guys, this is basically stopping me buying this car as everything else is ok.

So to get it straight.....the gauge at the bottom left of the dash display is oil level and not pressure? and it's meant to go up as you turn the ignition then go back to zero when engine running (as there would be no point in showing oil level once engine is started)

Yes that's as far as I know anyway, I doubt the sri is any different to the other models.

I think that's right -- Clio 16Vs used to have the same thing, it had an oil can symbol and would indicate the level before starting, and drop to zero when the motor started.

Thanks, it's just the car has 136k so wanted to double check.
I take it there is no way of checking oil pressure except checking for blow back from oil filler?

Thanks again,
Alan.

Paul.....meant to thank you for the response you gave about the Intergrale I was rallying sometime ago, managed to fix the ecu in time and the car went well.

Ah, yes that would be different if its not the pressure gauge

My 405 Mi16 has an oil temp/level sensor, so when you turn it past the acc ignition point to the 2nd point it shoots up to the top to show the oil level. Then when you start it, it returns to zero, then moves to the 2nd bar once the oil is up to temp (after about 20 mins).

You need to test drive it for 20 mins, see if it moves up, if so its the oil temp.

The 405 doesnt have oil pressure, so maybe the 406 is the same??

You could do a compression test? Easy enough to do by just removing the plugs and using a gauge.

It's actually my mates car, he does Hillclimb rallies all over.
He is currently working on an x15 2 litre turbo after successfully sticking a 2 litre 16v turbo thema engine in a Strada Abarth!!!....not much space!
He also has an original Strada Abarth and several other 'project' cars....
Old school eh!! can't beat the roar of twin 40's!!
Anyway thanks again for the advice I'm going tonight to buy the Peugeot just as a run about, don't know what they are like but it's fully loaded with elec heated black leather and I think thats the only thing that I'm looking forward to after driving a Saxo for about a year since selling the Subaru..

Cheers.
