Ford Cougar, any experience?
Hi Guys, just sold the scoob tonight and now in search of another motor for in the region of 4k. Seen a few Cougars and they seem a great spec motor for the price they fetch. anyone had any experiences? owt to look out for?
also open to suggestions of other motors around the 4k figure. needs to be "fairly" nippy so I dont get bored, cant be doing with an average 1.6 engine. Seen a few VW golf Mk4's around that price but they're all close or over 100k miles which puts the misses off (I know it'll do another 100k but thats not the point )
thanks
Dave

If you're after the 24v then be very careful for anything after 80k. Head gasket is a major weak point on this engine.
It's just a modeo in drag; great drive and engine(head gasket noted), with a lovely smooth pull, but no sports car. Good on juice - 30/35 mpg with no major flaws.
For 4k you can get a better car, though..............

Ok thanks for the pointers, going looking at 1 today 29500 miles on the clock 1 owners never been in the rain, only prob is its only had 2 services in its whole life.
Gathered it was a mondeo in drag. tbh I dont usually like fords but the cougar does look seductive IMO. Im not expecting anything great for it, we are looking at the V6 but still does 60 in 7seconds so its not as boring as many a other car.
If you think theres better for 4k let me know and Im more than interested.

I have just bought a MY2000 Mitsi Galant sport for around 4.5k
2.5 24v V6 engine is a jewel
30 mpg average
Sport Looks great IMHO 17" alloys, redesigned front spoiler leccy eveything + proper climate control
Group 15 ins
Great alround driving experience + some build quality to boot

I've had a V6 Cougar for over 4 years now and apart from wear and tear stuff I've only had to replace a few bulbs.
It's the very reliable mondeo with a rather nice makeover.

Nice Motor...very good buy for the money 2nd hand and very high spec on most. you'll need the V6 if you want it to be "nippy"
Problems such as the head gasket are 90% of the time caused by the water pump, which is prone. It basically an engine out job to fix IIRC (well it is for the mondeo V6 anyway). Most other things are little electrical/electronic gremlins, but nothing that would leave you stranded by the road. The gearbox can develop a noisy Idler gear (rattles in neutral, stops when you put the clutch in), this is not really a problem, but the boxes are prone to developing syncro faults, especially on 3rd gear.
It's a Ford, so expect it to rattle and squeek on various trim items. It does have quite a hard ride so that doesn't really help matters. It's not a very fast car, it is quite heavy, so don't expect it to be a speed demon...but it does handle ok and makes a fantastic noise when you push it
If your into performance mods, forget about it. There is pretty much nothing out there except pricey backboxes, remaps and induction kits. Although there are equivelent parts that would fit that you could import from the states that fit the Ford Contour V6 IIRC (performance cats and manifolds, downpipes etc - as the standard ones are VERY restrictive)

For that money and for a coupe, you've got to consider the Corrado VR6. A better car and superb handling. Search well and you'll get a great one that you'll wanna keep forever. I miss mine that's for sure. It does everything so well.

thanks for the feedback guys
I considered the galant, not many about to choose from either which is a minus
Corrado, again like the car, actually I love the cars unfortunately the misses doesnt (what a pain she can be...lol)
Bubba, subaru went to pay for my Plasma lol sold it last night for 7k and put 4k back into a car so we have 3k to spend on doing the downstairs in the house up plus insurance is due in feb and I didnt fancy paying a grand out for it. Dont think the scoob is all that to justify insurance costs
Anyways, today Ive bought a cougar 2.5ltr 24v V6. S plate, £4300 full black leather untouched 27800 miles on the clock with the history. superb motor, well chuffed with it.
