After a spectacularly good weekend...
....I am now on the hunt for a nice 911 , probably a 996 C4. Any good forums on these as I need to get up to speed before purchasing

996 looks the bollox on the inside though running cocts are potentially higher than a fully sorted 993.
P.S. I am glad they're water-cooled. 21st century and all that Porsche!! The interior has improved by a billion percent in the 996 as well.

Well good luck getting one!! Don't dismiss a 993, perhaps view/test one before settling on a 996???
A standard 996 might be a little soft for UK tracks - however there is a wee little circuit in Germany that will suit it rather well indeed.....

Incidently, I assume you have a 993?
I could probably stretch to a 993 Turbo of I get a left hooker

If you get a 993 you could "possibly" get a C2 'S' RHD. Uprated suspension/brakes I believe - oh, and the looks!!! Oooohhh!! LHD will be about 31k, RHD about 37 minimum.
I had a 944 Turbo but learnt alot about these when owning them and talking to other Porsche enthusiasts.
The only Porsche's I'm remotely interested in I can't afford (without getting credit which I don't wanna do). So I'll stick with a cheap track bomber and a nice road car.

Some of my experiences/views (having had 3 991's, both 993 and 996):
- stnd 996: be careful where/what you buy - the stnd. 'mass produced' wet sump 996/boxster motors have well documented rear oil seal (RMS in Porsche speak) and, more seriously, liner slippage (i.e. trashed motor) issues that you really need to protect yourself against (i.e. best waranttee you can buy). Stnd. 996's are brilliant every-day motoring cars, but can feel a bit 'GT-ish', rather than hard-core sports. They are a much more accessible fast drive than a 993, quieter etc etc and you're right about the interior - light years better. What they don't necessarily feel is 'fast' in the old-fashioned 964/993 way - but you try keeping up with a well driven 996 C2 in a 993. The s/h market is awash with older (s, t reg) C2s and C4s for peanuts (low 30's) and now is a good time to buy - just make sure jou choose the right colour (silver is not very flattering IMO, go blue or black) and get some nice rear boxes put on (the factory sports ones are great)- oh, and get one with sports seats (the stnd. seats are rubbish are serious motoring). If you're talking numbers, Autocar tested an early standard C2 (300 hp) at 1-100 in something around 10s - not slow by almost anybody's standards.
- stnd 993: a great 'character' drive, but not mega fast but today's standards (won't keep up with an STi ppp). One of the reasons I sold my (mint) 993 C4 was the ancient interior (and interiors are really important to me) Also bear in mind that even a varioram (the later 285bhp) one (n, p reg) is 8-9 years old car - things go wrong with nearly 10 year old cars and, whilst things like pads, discs etc are cheap, engine/g/box internals are REALLY expensive. C2S/C4S (i.e. turbo-body) look great, but are not as well balanced handling as the stnd. narrow bodied ones. +'s are the noise (wonderful), build quality (there'll never be another car built like a good 993) and the looks (need 17's/18's though).

need to watch what you say about "facelift" as most people will think you are on about the 01 cars with the 3.6 instead of the 3.4 . Think my99 had clear lenses and there very few that haven't been upgraded yet. For sites try these;

I agree with all of the above.
993 - looks to die for (esp S model)
996 - lower maintenance costs - but beware of the RMS issues ie Porsche approved if possible (greatish warranty).

No denying though the 993TT is one of the most stunning looking cars ever made.
Have a MY00 C4 and did quite a bit of research when I got it so I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. Basically whatever you do, get an independent inspection. And remember, 3rd party warranties are near worthless.

AndyAmb, sandycam, Skittles thanks for all the info, have checked out the links and will be starting research in earnest tonight.
I think I will probably go with the 996, but will test the 993 anyway just to be sure. Will NEED to test the 993TT just for the wow factor alone!
martyrobertsdj, not quite that good, basically sold my house, reserved the new build property we want. Made approx 100k on the sale. Also got an offer on a flat I am selling which will give me another 40-50k to play with, all happened on Saturday morning.
I can now move back to Scotland move from a 5 day week to a 3 day week and get a slight increase in wage to boot!!!

You can get a 993 tt for 40-42K and RHD, from a specialist dealer. I did two years ago when i got rid of my evo 7. The porker is a fantastic car - expensive to run mind. The 996 is too frequent a site these days and too soft, and depreciates alot especially since the arrival of the 997.
