how can I get a company car on the cheap?
I have a van at the moment and its coming up for a change - TBH I'm a bit sick of vans and fancy an estate car with some poke, but I absolutely, categorically refuse to be taxed for it, as at the moment my van costs me sweet FA as it is a pooled vehicle.
Due to the nature of our work, we couldn't really get away with calling a car a pool car - besides, I don't want the ******* getting thier grubby mitts on it
if for instance I had a budget of 13K to work with ( app cost of me getting new van ), how could I work it that the firm buys the car ( second hand BTW ) on finance, pays the insurance etc, but covers my costs for the tax I will pay? - petrol will be paid for by me and claimed back as non taxable expenses
any help or cunning plans appreciated
also some ideas of cars - quite like the galant or accord estates
anyone be able to give me rough ideas on tax costs on tasty estates??

On anything half quick, you'll get murdered on tax now that it is all CO2 based.
Your best bet is to go with one of the "hotter" diesels - its the only way to keep the CO2 down.
If your company will go second hand, get a car over 15 years old and it comes under classic company car rules and you pay virtually sod all tax but you have to put up with the reliability, comfort etc. of an older car - although at least you can get a petrol version!

Think about an MG ZR van.
Edit: after looking here: http://www.comcar.co.uk/vans/tax.cfm
"Dual purpose now vehicles need to be able to carry a 1 tonne payload to fall within van tax rules" So many it doesnt get classed as a van for tax?
"From 6th April 2007 the scale charge for unrestricted use will jump to £3,000 and if free fuel is provided for private use an additional benefit in kind charge of £500 will apply."
WTF!!!! From 2007 I'll have to pay £3,500 a year to use my company van for private use??!!!!

not all hot diesels are cheap tax wise as they are not all euro class 4 compliant you get stung for and extra 3% tax. If you do the maths you can find some hot petrol cars for less, VRS octavia estate. works out less than most diesels in its class due to the list price being 15k
they only way to avoid the tax is either, the company pays you an amount to cover the tax loss. (mine pays an extra £150 a month less tax) or the car is a pool car, but a definition of pool car by the inland revenue is very strict.

The cheapest quickish estate car that runs on petrol in terms of company car tax and benefit in kind and CO2 emissions is:
The BMW 325 Touring. I know this as I already did all the donkey work. (320 is a V.good option too it has almost identical performance figures, but is slightly cheaper due to the retail value)
The diesel route there is alot more options (although 320d is not bad) But it wasn't an option for us (as some company petrol gets "lost" into other people's cars ).
Oh and yes...the beamer is a pool car ...The Navi's had it last week when the old man borrowed the tranny, thankfully mud wipes off the leather quite easily
