Question HOW MUCH SMOKE?

Just bought an Escort turbo diesel with 89k on the clock and a fsh. Question is how much should it smoke? Does not smoke on tickover on on moderate driving but when the turbo kicks in my god I feel sorry for the people behind me. Bought it to give my scooby a rest from the daily commute but am a bit concerned. Any ideas is this normal. I know they smoke a bit but as this is my first diesel just thought id check.

its hard to say, I got a pug diesel runnabout that smoked like an old train when under load, but the smoke eased off after a few days of abuse.

lmao

anyway, mine appeared to have spent all its previous life pootling about town at 20mph, so I suspect some build-up of sooty carbon and stuff was maybe to blame. A few long high-speed runs gave the engine a chance to run a lot better and blow all the old muck out.

It still smoked under load, but not nearly as bad as it did.

I used to look around me at other diesel cars as I went up hills or pulled away from junctions to see how much they were smoking. As long as I wasnt substatially worse than them, i wasnt worried.

My sisters old Clio diesel used to smoke so badly that people would wave at her and shout that her car was on fire as she drove along....but then, she was running it on a shonky mix of central heating oil and chip fat.

The Ford TDs do smoke a bit, but if it's had a life of town pottering then it needs a good caning to blow the soot and crud out of the exhaust.

Give it some good diesel (Shell Extra, BP Ultimate) and take it for a 20-minute drive using the gears to keep the rev counter around 4000rpm as often as you can. Should help clear its throat.
