A tragedy. My favourite Ferrari the F40, that and the 288 gto upon which it was based. How much to repair one wonders.

Gorgeous looking car..... I would imagine its repairable but couldnt say for sure. Well I hope it is at least. Funnily enough I saw a Testerosa burnt out a while back, a pattern emerges hmmmmmmmm

When I saw it parked up later, I couldn't believe how little damage was done relative to the amount of smoke we saw from the pit area.

Major pisser for the poor bloke

Feel gutted for the bloke, like DocJock says amazed at how little(relatively) damage was done compared to the smoke. Did wonder if he was alright as it was right behind the drivers head looking at the damage. Speaking to the petrol pump bloke it seems he is, which is good.

Must sympathise with the guy as I hate to see anybody's pride and joy being damaged, to a point as I dont have an F40, even a slightly crispy one !

The car was towed there after being put out, from what I could see he had parked to the side of the track when it was on fire. Theres old airfield concrete at the edge of the proper track

I'd be pretty peeved if my life had been in danger due to an alleged design flaw ?! - not sure I'd want to take on Ferrari tho (heard they've got a bit of money behind them!!)

Dont think so, but maybe in real terms, it was in the 80's. It was $415,000 USD which comes out at about £300,000 I think for the exchange rate at the time.

Poor bloke. I think the F40 is the best supercar made, shame it doesn't have the noise of the 250LM to go with it, but the 'afterburner' fitted as standard helps

F40's are my favourite car ever, thats not the first i know to go up in flames though. Looking at the pics it does look like a fuel spilage problem with the way the soot has formed down the outside of the car below the filler.

The 5 years life on the tanks is based on the FIA certification for Bag tanks in motorsport, they are made to similar standards as Aircraft fuel tanks and can be recertified after inspection. It sounds like the filler mechanism is tired rather than a tank problem.

If i remember correctly, a new rear screen for an F40 is £12K.

Even with an F40 he's had to modify it for better handling and braking

What hope is there for us mere mortals, will it never end the quest for a better car?
