Default Renault totalled by silly woman, replacement?

Right due to a Ford Ka being driven into my stationary 19 at 70mph I need a new car

As much as I'd love an impreza after all these years hankering for one I don't feel that I can afford to run one yet.

So looking for semi sensible (well for this forum just plain sensible ) replacements.

So far I can think of either an Ibiza Cupra (2001ish) or a Clio 172/Cup.

Ibiza I guess has the straight line grunt when chipped, but standard not great and handling standard not great. But nice build etc.

Clio has good mpg, good handling, goes well. Still can't decide on a Mk1 172, Mk2 172 or a Mk2 172 cup as well.
Mk1 has the speed and all the toys
Mk2 172 has the toys but not so much speed (I read somewhere over 7 secs to 60?)
Mk2 Cup has the speed (and horrible seats)

Max budget ideally 7-8k, the Mk1 172 would come in well under that which is also a bonus.

An other ideas/comments?

Let me get this right you want an impreza, but cant afford to run one, but the cars you are looking at are all(pretty much)in the same ins group. Yes the petrol mmaybe a bit higher on a turbo ijpreza but you can pick one up well within your budget. Or you can buy a sport or gx model of an impreza. I own one of these myself and they go fine for me. Personally if iwas to buy one of the cars that you have stipulated it would be the 172 cup. It'll handle better than the cupra(so i have heard) and they are pretty cool to boot!

Groupings mean dick all at the end of the day tbh.

Ibiza cupra is 500, Clio cup is 600, Impreza uk turbo is 800. And I'd need a tracker.

Clio does 30-40mpg, Scooby 25-30 (at best). I'm also guessing servicing etc is cheaper on a clio.

I can't decide

Yup, although lived with the old car for almost 5 years and 50k miles.

Tis a bit dead now though. Saying that considering what happened I think the car could have come off worse, will still be written off tho I guess.

1) ITR (www.itr-dc2.com)
2) 172 Clio Cup (www.cliosport.net)
3) Ibiza Cupra (http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/)
4) Mint Low Mileage Corrado VR6 Storm if age doesn't bother you (upto MY96) (http://www.the-corrado.net/forum/index.php)
5) S14 200SX Touring (RWD ) (www.sxoc.co.uk)

All much cheaper to run & maintain than Impreza Turbo's, major mechanical parts arguarbly more reliable apart from possibly maf issues with the vag 1.8 20vT but not sure on the Nissan?

I hate women in Ka's, always Philadelphia Girl types who do their make up in the rear view mirror while driving in a selfish manner. Not surprised you're 19 was totalled by one.

Get a clio cup.

Get the Clio, other than the odd sqeak & rattle, the're much more reliable than most people think. I owned three fast renaults over a 7 year period (including a R19 16v which was great) & had no major problems on any of them.

A mate of mine bought an 02 Reg 172 just before Xmas and paid £7500 private. Great car (if a bit small inside).

I'd love an ITR, but finding one that isn't a million miles away and in my budget is proving tricky.

No doubt Phil and Paul's stock of 1916V parts will be increasing soon

Take a look at the Focus 2.0 Zetec ESP or even an ST170, you will be pleasantly surprised as I was. I bought an ESP after selling my Clio Valver to Infinicar and the performance wasnt far off but the handling is in a different league. I never got the chance to try an ST but I think they would be a bit of a hoot. Insurance group on the ESP is 8 which is one of the reasons why I whent for the ESP.

Was wondering what Foci were decent bar the tdci, st170 and of course the RS as they are all out of budget.

Will take a look at the ESP

Had the call today, the 19 is officially a Cat B write off

Was going to look for a nice pug, there's a xsara round the corner for not too much, I know handling isn't as good but interior is nicer imho and I only really drive in straight lines

Er, forget the VR6 if you're on a budget , the most expensive car to run I've ever owned, and by some distance.

Clio is pretty safe if you are going to get hit by a woman in a Ka again.
