The newer 'version' is the TF although it's newer underneath and not just a styling thing.
There are several engine options ranging from a 1.6 115bhp (spit) model to the 1.8 vvc 160 bhp giving 0-60 of 6.7 IIRC and about 140mph (can vouch for 135 indicated myself). The mrs used to have a 160 and it's a very nice driver......a bit of a handful in the wet tho...that's how it was written off.
We're off to see another one on saturday so may end up with another.
If you want to know more, go to www.mg-rover.org and click on the MG/MGTF section...
Having a rover coupe turbo myself, I'm regularly on there. Anything you need to know, ask there and you'll get an answer!
The 05 model has had some slight mode, mainly to the suspension as it used to be a bit 'focussed' shall we say...

The plastic dowel's were changed for steel ones in early 2001, this has reduced the number of HGF's but both F's and TF's still seem to be prone to them, although the instances now are a lot less than it was.
If you're looking for an F go for a Trophy, only about 500 were made, in early - mid 2001. They are the quickest F's.
Fit a splitter to the front (if the car doesn't have one), that goes a long way to sorting the handling out, and makes the car very stable at high speed.

I was driving one last year and going about 20mph when someone pulled out 20 yards in front of me....slammed the brakes on and tried to avoid them/steer around them but the wheels just locked up and i skidded into them. ABS didnt even attempt to work at all on a 3 month old car. No warning light had been on or anything. ****.

My mate's fed up of replacing Rover HG's. The last one he did was a waste of time because the engine just spewed water out when rebuilt and the customer decided to scrap it rather than replace the engine!! (Not an MGF though)

The metal dowels isn't the main issue. You can get an uprated HG which has an increased seal on the head but even that isn't the perfect option.
Elise's are common failures on the headgaskets too.
Don't buy. More hassle than it's worth.

The doors dont fit right, it leaks, the carpet is coming away from the door, interior feels terrible, and now the handling is crap cos she bought some new GSD3's for the rear.
Compared to MR2's/MX's etc they dont compare. Go for a late MR2 mk2

I used to have a V Reg MGF, never once had a problem with it (although friends and colleagues all had head gasket problems on newer and older ones). I thought it was a fantastic little car - but luck of the draw whether your head gasket blows or not.

Don't trust the build quality on MGF and like all Rovers it is now a very old car underneath those styling tweaks. I agree with Dream Weaver....MK2 MR2 is a similar shape but unlike the Brum effort will last forever......my wife was running one that had 180,000 miles on it ....was perfect till some window-licker with a screw driver borrowed it. Incidentally, it was more fun to drive than my wrx.

Lots of personal opinion on here but my advice would be to go and see for yourself. We may well buy one tomorrow because we did just that and pushed all the preconceptions aside and actually looked into what ownership meant.
Don't simply dismiss the TF based on things like depreciation and build quality etc etc. If you want a nearly new TF anyway, any worries of HGF won't be there as most are pretty low milage.
Pro's and cons for each convertible available, just get whatever fits your needs.

Its not really opinion, but experience.
I used to have a 1994 MR2, my dad has a 1996 MR2.
My sister has a 53 plate TF, and my friend used to have a 1997 MGF.
Of those 4 cars the MR2's never had a single problem, and my dad's still has nothing wrong. Both MGF's suffered/are auffering from major pains. My mates 97 MGF had an engine mount snap at 70mph on the motorway, which dropped the engine down and cost a bomb to fix.
You will get good ones, like any car, and I love my French cars so know all about reliability issues But when it comes to 2 seaters I reckon the Jap cars are better.

HGF on the engine is down to the sandwhich design of the K-series block. It the bolts are torqued up every now and then with the service it should be fine...im lead to belive. Great engines other wise.

Go to peachorlemon.co.uk (don't know how to add a link) for an unbiased view. Check out loads of other makes too. Some of it makes for very interesting reading........

LOL at the typical responses. they're not crap, but not brilliant. pretty solid cars, do the trick for most people (i.e. 35-55 year old women!)
