205 GTi
How stupidly expensive would the insurance be on a 1.9 205 GTi for a 19 year old with one years no claims (male) be?
Please feel free to name any of the slightly less well known insurance companies to look at.

I would hazard a guess at somewhere between £1,000 and £1300 perhaps?

I had one of these beasts before the subaru and what a car they are. I would have another today if I had the money or the subaru had to go, but they are like rocky horse shti, you never seem to see a good one on the road these days, like the r5 turbos etc. Your best bet for insurance would be to join the peugeot sport club etc and go through their approved insurance broker or find out the company that deals with them and give them a try. I was insured through Chriss Knott and then through Greenlight which also insures my current car, they seem quite good and like mods too.
Hope this helps

I used to insure one of those in my dad's name between 18-21. I expect you'll be looking at over 1k in your name, but fantastic cars - if you can find a good one! As soon as youre 21 you can get classic car insurance on these for peanuts

1.9 gti turbo technics owner? you lucky sod! I nearly went this root myself, and the wife was up for it. In the end I just could not justify paying £3500 for the upgrade on an £3000 car, so I went for a £13000 scooby instead!!!!!!????????? it makes sense doesnt it??????????????/

still got my pug after over 7 years of ownership and wouldn't give it up tbh . Try elephant for a quote (£321 tpft, poor postcode, 29 yr, 7 yr no claims), or i used to use Performance direct (Doric were the underwriters) and they were even cheaper but i couldn't have protected NCD with them so moved .
Hope that helps m8

You might be able to get it onto a classic policy, problem is your age. You'll struggle to find a company that would insure someone so young. Worth a look into though...

Try HIC for insurance as well. They were crap for me, but good for others.
I was paying £351 TPFT for my 205 Mi16 when it was running with Adrian Flux.
My current 405 Mi16 is £262 a year
31 with 8 years PNCD

If it's too punitive you can go for a 1.6? They aren't so bad, you basically miss status (!), power steering, some torque, and half-leather IIRC. But the irony was, with the cats on the later 1.9s, their power was not much more than the earlier 1.6s.

Hi,
I was driving CRX 16v (a much better car than the 205 GTi) try one, you will love revving it to 7200rpm, and being built like a car should. Driving posistion is much better, its coupe, handling is very good (all round wish-bone) electrics which actually work. And not as popular as 205's both on the roads and for twocers. Its soo much better. Honda reliabiltiy etc.
Anyhows, rant over, i was paying £850 for mine, at 20 years old, no ncb, my own policy, mum as my second driver all legit. Elelphant.co.uk, just dont crash, rumours are not good about them. Unless you have been in nippy cars since a yoof, you will probs crash it- the truth hurts. You maybe like me and brought up around fast cars, so it could be all good.
Helmet....Check!
gloves....Check!
Flame suit...Check!.
Kam- Have fun, buy a CRX, and drive carefully.

Of course CRX's are better, hence why you still see motoring journalists going on about their iconic performance and handling 20 years after they were introduced
CRX's are OK, but they are a squat looking rice machine when all said and done You cant beat a bit of French va va voom
205 is a legend, and anyone that properly owns one for any length of time will agree

Seconds out, round 2....
Go get im mate - Wonder why so many others on here have 205's instead of CRX's
Brendan - you did say prepare to be corrected PAS was just as common on the 1.6 as the 1.9 And the CAT 1.9s are still a bit faster (122 instead of the XU9JA's 130 and the XU6JA was 115, early examples 105 but suspect there ain't many of them left!)), and remove the CAT and its right back up there again

Small point ...
As our friend from the 205 board (pumaracing I believe) pointed out the
question of which is more powerful (1.6 or 1.9) is prolly more dependant
upon how each has been looked after ... a later 1.6 which has been looked
after is prolly much more likely to get near it's quoted figures than a
'less so' 1.9
Having said all of that, you'd be surprised how hard you have to try when
driving a a fully rebuilt MI16 when compared to 'reasonable' 1.6 !!
As for CRX's ... yes, excellent cars ... preferred the non V-TEC ... fond
memories, my father had two in succession which he even let me drive
(waay back then at the tender age of 18 !!!) ... prefer the 205 though

Mike - in all honesty, you'd be better off looking for a 205 XS - great version of the 205 and nearly as quick as a 1.6 gti to 60.
Insurance group 7 or something - they are superb. Fit a PiperX filter and a straight through system from a 205 1.1 and you will have fun, trust me

As DW says, the XS is a storming car, to all intents and purposes a 1.6GTi, as its barely slower but much cheaper to insure. And you can get an aftermarket GTi kit, no one would ever know it wasn't!

SJ - fair enough. Mine were D and E plates, 115bhp, and I had them pre-owned (93 and 95 IIRC), by which time the catted 1.9s were 122bhp. Made me a bit smug. Doubtless PAS was on the new 1.6s that were out of my price range at the time.
XS - the only real difference is no i, isn't it? Carbed 1.6? I also heard many a good tale.

I was never impressed with the 205 gti. My brothers had a few, and had an Mi16. That really was fantastic, but got stolen in two weeks.
If you take off your rose tinted T16 group B rally specs, you WILL realise that CRXs are better. Still they are cool in their own right etc, a$se licked by everyone.

PAS came as standard on the 1989/90 Sorrento and Miami special editions and it was an option after that, as the paint colours were. Mines PAS and I love it, best PAS car I've ever driven, so much feedback through the system, not overassisted at all - in fact its quite heavy, but they have a quicker rack which means the turn in is greatly improved
The XS was actually a 1.4 carb (TU series I believe, same engine class as fitted to the 106's). I think they were about 85bhp, but the gearing meant they were very little slower than the 1.6 GTi

I've met very few people who dislike the 205, but IMHO if someone cant get on with the amazing handling, steering feel, performance and looks of the 205 GTi then they're not much of a driver
205 PAS is good, but i've removed mine for the hardcore experience

Just this once I will agree with you DW......
I have a feeling the 205GTI will be like the Mk1 /Mk2 escort in a few years and start rising in value and become very desirable in the rally / track day world.

In the mean time, I've had mine on the road for a week and I'm still grinning.

Ive just purchased a 1.9 205 with a mate for track days and it has only been out once so far, RSOC @ Bedford last Sat but all I can say is wow. the turn in (non powersteering) is excellent & the handling is so much fun. Stripped the seats out & put in harnesses & buckets and for the money i don't think anything can compare. 5* evo rating can't be wrong.
