Anyone know much about e36 M3's?
One of my dad's mates has just bought a 1998 s plate M3. On looking at the handbook after buying it, it appears that this one was handbuilt in the BMW factory (has builders names etc to prove), and also factory tuned to 420BHP ATFW (again, factory dyno sheet to prove).
On giving the local dealer his chassis number (which starts 666) they have informed him it is a "devil" edition - hand built and tuned and limited to a run of 30.
I cannot find any information out about the "special" edition so is it true?, if it were true - I would assume he got a bargain for 13K?

Not something i have heard of, but that is not to say it isn't true. But 420hp is not really gonna happen out of a 3.2 straight 6 - a V8 or some sort of forced induction would be the only way to get there

The was a m3 3.0 GT green which some diff suspension and a M3 3.2 GT2 in red with diff spoilers etc, but no engine mods an the 420BHP seems wierd, if it is that quick then it must have been done after the M3 was manufactured. BMW dont make many special editions an the only made the GT1 & GT2. An they had stock power outputs.
I sold mine after it need a service every 6-8K miles an very expensive too, i got a 5 litre M5 now an the intervals are 12K and the servicing costs are a third less than an old M3.
Have u tried an M5, the torque is amazing. An its better built than an M3.
If you do go for an M3, make sure it has FSH.

Cheers for input - there are definitely Factory dyno sheets - and it is definitely hand built - are "normal" m3's?
M5 - i'm not looking for the car, my dad's mate has already bought it!
Seems hard to believe I know - but like I say it is DEFINITELY hand built and the figures DEFINITELY say 420 (380 ATW) - I will get my dad to make sure it is in HP!

No such thing as a 'devil' edition. Ive had an m3 evo, and read extensively on them before buying and during 18 months of ownership. I have never heard of a handbuilt m3, and certainly no normally aspirated producion m3 that makes 420bhp....
The m3 GT is about as raw as it gets, and I doubt very much you would be able to pick an S plate up for 13k....
Go on www.bm3w.co.uk as there are some real m3 boffins on there, but Im very sceptical of the claims of this particular m3

LOL
An N/A 3.2 putting out 420bhp.
It might happen in the next 10 years, but I doubt it.
To buy that type of tech in 1998 would have cost your mate F1 money (design, production, etc at millions of pounds!).
I think a Stella or two too many was had when he was giving you the figures.

I don't remember saying it was a 3.2 - if factory built - it could have a bigger engine?
I will check that the figures are correct (as said, he has a dyno print-out)!
J4mou - cheers for your help - hopefully cheeseboy will be able to shed some light - as I find it as unbelievable as you guys do - but if he has the docs/figures you never know!
Whatever - sounds like a nice car - has recepts for £4k of Alpina Alloys!

BMW did use 3.2 straight six in one GT series, and the car did make 420bhp.
Whether or not this car has a full-on race engine remains to be seen! It's feasible that BMW sold un-prepared race cars to privateers with the engine already built but with a standard drivetrain? Maybe someone bought one to use on the road? Feasible but quite unlikely I'd have thought!
Why not take it to a rolling road? It should be pretty obvious from driving it though!
I'd imagine the 'devil edition' was just a joke on their part?

waiting on official documents to arrive with the bloke to take pictures of (also will be getting a picture of the motor).
It was £60k when new
It has a proper blueprinted engine, and the figures from BMW are:
308Kw/418.9PSHP pre Trans Crank 6900rpms - max 8200rpms - limit 7400rpms
278Kw/378.1PSHP post Trans Crank 6900rpms - max 8200rpms - limit 7400rpms
Like I say, pictures will be gotten hold of when possible.

Intriguing, and sounds like a blinding bargain if it's what it says it is. I'd imagine trying to insure it would be fun - I know what hassle it is trying to get the an MY03 5 door WRX UK car recognised sometimes!

Just waiting for them to pull their fingers out and send me some pictures of the documentation and engine etc!
Out of interest, Alpina didn't do anything to the M3 did they (just wondering if it is an Alpina model as he has receipts for £4k's worth of Alpina Alloys)!

Dont companies like Alpina etc make their own BMW's? I think they take a standard shell etc and build their own cars by hand (hence engineers name on the engine)?? 60K sounds about right for an Alpina BMW!!

e36 M3 Evo is a superb car.
(imo) nothing better all round for 13k. Performance, looks, quality, practicality. Even fuel efficiency. They have it all.
Just get insurance quoted before purchasing!!!!!!!

OK - old man has the dyno plots etc now - will scan either tomorrow or at the weekend and post up!
The sheets show 420ps, and also who tested the car (@BMW), and the modificatiosn the car has (from memory there was something about 6branch manifold, air flow, port + polish ECU mapping etc - all done at BMW in Germany)
I will get the sheets and scan them in. The documents also state that information can only be given if the VIN is proved as starting with 666, and that the car was special ordered to GT spec (so i assume that the engine is the same as used in the GT cars).
Gonna have to get a go in this monster - he is talking of getting rid of his new 'Blade as the car is so complete!
Will post up docs ASAP!
