Default Disagreement in the pub last night....

Friend of mine reckons the Golf GT-TDi was (or is) quicker then the Golf GTi. Apparently as shown on Top Gear?

So, is the GT-TDi with 150bhp quicker then the Golf GTi 200BHP? Mind you is he talking about the previous GTi ie non-turbo?

TIA

Buck

Yes mate, i believe it was, the previous generation Golf Gti (not the turbo) version was no-where near brisk enough to be considered a hot hatch, IIRC 0-60 took 10 seconds. I believe the GTi -TDI does it in about 9. The Turbo GTi was pretty awful too, but at least could crack under 9 to 60mph, it was as dull as ditchwater though.

There was a discussion about this in 'Other Marques' a while ago. A JPEG was shown of technical data for the 150bhp petrol GTi and 150bhp (ie same power output) TDi Golf side by side from a two-way test done in, I think, a German magazine.

The diesel golf was a good bit faster 0 to 60 and quarter mile, despite having the same power output and being heavier than the petrol. The in gear times of course made the petrol look like a bit of a joke.

well, they might both have 150bhp - but the diesel will have bags more torque
